Chess, Caissa, the sixty-four squares, the Game of Kings, One night in Bangkok, I get my kicks above the waist line, sunshine! Speaking of chess (and we were) here is a link to Chess - the Musical. I've played chess from quite a young age when my father taught me. It took me a fair number of years before I could beat him and playing him is a challenge anytime. I mostly play correspondence chess via email as a member of the IECG. I'm currently rated about 1708 which is somewhere between an average and strong player. I enjoy over-the-board chess but on the whole I make too many stupid mistakes. At least in correspondence chess, I can keep these down to a minimum, although I have still hung a queen or missed a one move mate in my games.

Chess on the Internet is huge. Reference and training information abounds and there are thousands of active players all over the place. You can find live lectures from Grandmasters, coverage of the latest world-class tournaments and you can even occasionally take the opportunity to play a famous Grandmaster.

I find chess very therapeutic. I can calm and clear the mind, and allows one to find a focus that often eludes in real life. An interesting case for the value of chess in early education can be made. Chess in schools in the US is growing and there are some inspiring success stories concerning the advantages a chess program has contributed to disadvantaged students.
