The Worthingtons of Denford, Grafton Underwood, Slipton and Sudborough.

This web page is a very basic outline of the family ancestry of (some of) the Worthingtons from the above areas in Northamptonshire.

I’ve put it together to try and get more information on some branches of the family.

My main aim is to find living Worthingtons with whom I share ancestors.

I’d be extremely grateful to anyone who can help me fill in the blanks.  The areas where I’ve come to a halt are shown in red.

You can email me on my initial and surname here@ihug.co.nz (For anti-spam reasons, please replace all the text before the ‘@’ with the first letter of my name, followed immediately by my surname - for example, if my name was Joe Bloggs, you would use ‘jbloggs’)

It’d be great to hear from you!

Walter Worthington.

Notes

John Worthington’s Brothers

I think John Worthington (b1786), had two brothers, Jarvis Worthington (b1802) and William Worthington (b1790).

The reason I think so is that they were all born in Slipton, and one of John’s grandchildren was named ‘John Jarvis Worthington’.  Given that Jarvis is a reasonably unusual name for that time, it seems to support some sort of family connection.

John Worthington’s Father

At one point I came across a hand-drawn chart referring to one of Jarvis or William (I can’t remember which one) who married into the Nichols family, and whose father was supposed to be a Gervase (Jarvis?) Worthington, born in Sudborough in 1748.

I also came across some records in IGI that indicated that Gervase’s father was called John, who married a Sara Knight in 1736 in Sudborough.

If you have any information that would support this theory, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

Descendants of John’s (possible) brother William

I can’t find anything in the census records to prove that William was the son of John and Elizabeth, but I’m assuming it is possible due to William having the same birth location as Eliza, Charlotte etc.

Again, I’ve highlighted the people I’d most like to have further information on

William Worthington – b 1790 (Slipton)

m Susannah – b1790 (Rothwell)

  |---John Worthington – b 1830

  |    m Elizabeth

  |      |--- Annie Worthington – b 1865 (

  |      |--- Rebecca Worthington – b 1866 (Pinchbeck)

  |      |--- William Worthington - b 1874 (Pinchbeck)

  |      |--- Mary Worthington - b 1868 (

  |      |--- Sarah Worthington – b 1871 (

  |      |--- John Worthington – b 1869 (

  |      |--- Emma Worthington – b 1876 (

  |---Eliza Worthington – b 1834

  |---Charlotte Worthington – b 1821

  |---William Worthington *  b 1827 (Rothwell)

       m Eliza – b1829

         |--- Ann Worthington – b 1858 (Tichmarsh)

         |--- Mary Worthington – b 1861 (Tichmarsh)

         |--- John Weekley Worthington – b1857 (Oundle) d 1920 (Lowick)

              m Rebecca – b 1855 (Titchmarsh)

                 |--- Harry Worthngton – b 1892

                 |--- William Worthington – b 1882

* I haven’t been able to prove this, although it seems very likely given the birthplaces etc.

Descendants of John’s (possible) brother Jarvis

Jarvis Worthington – b1802 (Slipton)

m Elizabeth

  |---William Worthington – b1825 (Slipton)

  |---Mary Worthington – b 1827 (Slipton)

  |---Elizabeth Worthington – b 1831(Slipton)

  |---Charles Worthington – b 1835 (Slipton)

  |---Sofia Worthington – b 1837 (Slipton)

The two Walters in Denford

I’ve had considerable trouble sorting out which of the two Walter Worthingtons shown in the UK Census of 1861 I’m descended from, and hence who Walter’s father was

This is because the census for this year shows them both as being born in Grafton and Grafton Underwood respectively.

However, I believe I’ve sorted it out as follows:

  • I know, from oral family history, that the Walter I’m descended from lived most of his life in Denford, and died there.
  • Most of the census records for this Walter (from Denford) show that he was born in Brigstock.
  • The 1851 census records show a William Werthington (different spelling) with two children (Sarah and Walter) born in Brigstock, and the rest in Grafton Underwood.

As far as connecting William to John, I have a copy of William’s marriage certificate to Elizabeth, which clearly states that his father’s name was John.

The ‘other’ Walter Worthington in Denford

As I’ve said, I haven’t been able to quite pin down my connection to this branch of Worthingtons.  However, I believe that this Walter comes from a line stemming from one of John’s brothers.  If you have any information on this, I’d really appreciate you getting in contact with me.  I haven’t done much research on this line – all the information comes from a tree posted by Helen Harrison on GenesReunited.

      William or Jarvis

       m Susannah or

         | ---Unknown ?

               m Sarah ?

                 |---Walter Worthington – b 1845 / 1846 (Grafton Underwood)

                       m Caroline

                         |---Arthur Worthington – b 1870 (Stavely)

                         |     m Sarah Smith – b 1877

                         |       |---Albert Worthington – b 1898 (Stavely)

                         |       |    m Rebecca Ripley – b 1902

                         |       |      |---Arthur Worthington – b 1929 (Stavely)

                         |       |      |---Helen Worthington (adopted)

                         |       |---Joseph Worthington – b 1900 (Stavely)

                         |       |---Wilfred Worthington – b 1902 (Stavely)

                         |       |---Luke Worthington – b 1905 (Stavely)

                         |       |---Jessie Worthington – b 1910 (Stavely)

                         |---Sarah Worthington – b 1873 (Stavely)

                         |---Walter Worthington – b 1875 (Stavely)

                         |---John Worthington – b 1878 (Stavely)

                         |---Mary Worthington – b 1881 (Stavely)

The only way to prove that Walter was the son of Sarah (and to find out who the father was, if that was shown) is to get the birth certificate for the entry shown in the Kettering birth register of June 1845.

Other Questions

Laura Worthington – b 1889 (Denford)

The 1891 census shows her as a visitor in Tottenham, Middlesex, but her parents are not shown.

I can’t find any records of her in FreeBMD, and would love to know who her parents were.

William Worthington – b 1877 (Grafton Underwood)

He is shown as a boarder in the 1901 Census, but I can’t find any other information.

Given that he should really be in the 1881 and 1891 census records, it might be that this is a mis-transcription for the William born in 1874 in Pinchbeck (one of the digits seems a bit obscured by a pen mark)

William Weekley Worthington – b1867 (Thrapston)

FreeBMD show him as being born in 1867, and having died in 1868, but I don’t know who his parents were.

William Henry Worthington – b 1863 (Thrapston)

Again, FreeBMD shows a record of him, but I can’t find any record of him in the census records.

Henry P Worthington

FreeBMD shows a record of him getting married in 1914 in the Thrapston register to somebody with the surname Mansfield, but I can’t seem to find any census records of him, although I would expect him to be in the 1901 register at least.

I would love to know who his parents / descendants were, although FreeBMD also shows him as having a child

John WM Worthington, b 1916 in the Thrapston area, with a mothers maiden name of Mansfield.

Sarah Worthington – b 1821

I came across a family tree which suggested she was the mother of (the ‘other’) Walter, and that she had died in Loddington in 1892.

There was also some suggestion that she was the daughter of William and Susannah (of Slipton)

Wilsworth Worthington – b 1851

There is a FreeBMD record of a Wilsworth getting married in Sept. 1905 in the Thrapston register.

Due to the name being so unusual, I guess this would be the same as the one recorded in my information.

Joseph Worthington – b 1884

There is a FreeBMD record of a Wilsworth getting married in Dec. 1906 in the Kettering register.

I would guess this is the same Joseph as the one shown in the information above, given that he would be around 21 in 1906.

Walter William Worthington – b 1907

There is a FreeBMD record of  this in the June 1907 Kettering register.

Jessie Worthington – b 1909

There is a FreeBMD record of this in the June 1909 Kettering register.

Harry Worthington  - b 1886

There is a FreeBMD record of Harry’s mariage in the Sept. 1910 Kettering register.

Albert Worthington – b 1915

Linda Worthington – b 1915

There is a FreeBMD record of them both in the Sept 1915 Kettering register, with the mother having the same maiden name in both cases. (twins?)

Ernest Worthington – b 1888

There is a FreeBMD record of Ernest’s mariage in the Dec 1915 Kettering register.

John Worthington – b 1917

There is a FreeBMD record of  this in the Mar 1917 Kettering register.

Wilfred Worthington – b 1902

There is a FreeBMD record of Wilfred’s mariage in the Jun 1921 Kettering register.

I’m guessing this is the correct one, since the age looks right.
