Arguably some of the best white wines in the world are now produced in New Zealand. Being a relatively young country (discovered by Abel Tasman just over 200 years ago), with rich, fertile soil and a good grape growing climate, New Zealand wines are typically fuller-flavoured than their European counterparts, while still achieving a pleasing dryness. The youthfulness of the soil and the warmth of the sunshine is there to be tasted in the wine. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are produced in quantity, while Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc have found favour in recent years. Reds are also produced, with Pinot Noir gaining international acclaim. For those interested in wine, check out the New Zealand Wine Institute website where you can tour New Zealand's wine regions, and find out about international outlets for New Zealand wines. Gloria personally recommends several regions including Hawkes Bay and Martinborough (known for Pinot Noir) in the North Island, and Marlborough (a lovely place!) at the top of the South Island. These areas are shown in blue on the map on Gloria's Town& Around page. Specific vineyards Gloria recommends for consistent quality and value would include the Shingle Peak range from Matua Valley Wines west of Auckland, and from Marlborough, Allan Scott's and Hunter's vineyards. If you're interested in buying New Zealand wine, Fine Wine Online is a good place to start. They will quote you to ship wine anywhere in the world. Do read the finer detail, as not all the wine on offer is produced in New Zealand. Happy browsing !
