♣ Christchurch ♣ Kaikoura

Current article: Kaikoura Kaikoura is on the east coast of the South Island, a few hours' drive from Picton, where the ferry drops you off. It's famous for its marine mammals: seals, whales, and dolphins. The coastline is rocky and rugged and utterly beautiful. You can stop just about anywhere along the coastal highway and see seals basking on the rocks and mudflats.
WhaleWatch Kaikoura is a commercial tourism enterprise that will take you out on the ocean and let you see whales and dolphins. They're very environmentally sensitive and follow strict rules, staying a set distance away from the animals so as not to disturb them, and allowing no more than three boats to be near the animals at any given time. The tours are a bit pricey, but they're superbly done.
