Thomas owned an umbrella making business in Cheltenham with his brother John Aston between 1844 and 1851. Thomas and his family sailed for NZ on the Pudsey Dawson which sailed from London arriving Port Nicholson 23/12/1854 They settled in Port Nicholson, where Thomas opened a hardware business called Birmingham and Sheffield Warehouse.
