All New Zealanders with Strong Learning Foundations
Every New Zealander needs a strong learning base they can build upon, and which they can call upon, to give them the best chance to achieve their goals. We have identified that essential foundation skills and attitudes need to include:
Foundation learning straddles all levels of the system and all stages of a person's life. The first opportunity a learner should have to gain these early foundations is from their parents, families and whanau and then when they participate in quality early childhood education. Later, at school, this learning is reinforced and developed. The system also needs to be able to target those who might have missed out early on, through adult education.
- The ability to read, write and communicate effectively
- Sound numeracy skills
- Self-confidence, including a strong sense of cultural identity and pride
- Openness to diversity, challenge, and change
- Learning skills and an enthusiasm for ongoing learning.
