Question and Answer
| From: PT@aol.com Date sent: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 Subject: Polination vectors Hi I am doing a plantsmanship course at an English Horticultural college and have been tasked to produce an assignment which includes the question: 'Investigate the pollination mechanisms of a named member of the Orchidaceae family and relate the mechanism to the botanical structure and form of the flower. Discuss the ecological advantage a particular pollination mechanism confers on the plant.' I am finding it difficult to find the relevant information and wondered if you could kindly help me. I would be most grateful if you could. Many thanks in anticipation Dorothy |
| Hi Dorothy The best book on this subject is ORCHID FLOWERS THEIR POLLINATION AND EVOLUTION by l van der Pijl and Calaway H. dodson published by the University of Miami Press 1966 Library of congress catalogue no 66-28521. A good library should have this publication despite its age. This publication gives the best coverage of the subject that I know of. You may be able to find information on an odd plant, but not the range of coverage contained in this one Good luck with your search for a copy Phil |
