In 1925, Tokujiro Namikoshi opened the Shiatsu Institute of Therapy on Hokkaido. In 1957, under the new name of Japan Shiatsu School, Namakoshi Shiatsu was officially licensed by the Minister of Health and Welfare. It is the first and only school in Japan conducting specialist education in this field.
Shiatsu (literally meaning finger pressure) is a pathway to self healing and the healing of others. Shiatsu applies manual and digital pressure to the skin with the aim of preventing and curing illness by stimulating the body’s natural powers of recuperation, eliminating fatigue-producing elements, and promoting general good health. The fact that some of my clients have been coming regularly for over 10 years I think attests to its effectiveness.
In August 1988 I graduated from an intensive Training Course in Namakoshi Shiatsu with Denise Linn. In June 1989, after having given over 70 shiatsu, I attended a further 2-day training with Denise and was honoured to be told that I was considered competent to teach.
Denise Linn’s shiatsu teacher was Master Gouedy who had personally trained with Namakoshi. In my shiatsu notes from Denise, she says,
“There is more power in Shiatsu than we can ever know. You will notice that individuals will be drawn to you as a catalyst for transformation and change. After a Shiatsu your client’s will go through enormous change either through job, relationships, environment or their personal perception of themselves. Though sometimes uncomfortable, that change is always good. Just as the wind blows the old branches from the trees allowing for new growth, your Shiatsu will contribute to extraordinary transformation,”
Course notes and diagram will be supplied.
