Kia ora, my name is Bernie Niwa Brass. I worked in the logging industry for over twenty years where we used to crush any other plants in the way of the trees including pongas. I decided to take some pongas home and try my hand at chainsaw carving. People really liked what I was doing and I would make pots and animals and give them away to my friends. After a while, what I was doing spread by word of mouth and I started selling my carvings. After being made redundant I decided to make ponga carving my business and have been carving fulltime now since November 2004.
Mainly carved from fibrosa and mamaku ponga, these are handpicked and carefully removed with permits
from private forests in the central North Island.Pongas range in size from 400mm to 1m in diameter and up to 3m high.
All sculptures are one-of-a-kind and can be made to order.
