1522                speculative Possible deaths of Portugese sailors in fight with Maori.
1576                Speculative: death of 24yr old son of Juan FERNANDEZ, Wellington Harbour.
1642                 20 dec: 4 Sailors with Abel Tasman were killed in Murderer’s Bay (now Golden Bay)  Jan TYSSEN, Tobias PIETERSZ, Jan ISBRANTSZ
1769                7 sailors with de SURVILLE died of scurvy
1772                Marion du FRESNE,  M de VAUDRICOURT and 25 other crew members killed Te Hue Bay (Assassination Cove) Bay of Islands
1773                10 crew members, including officer ROWE, of the Adventure were killed in Queen Charlotte Sound.
1806                6 crew of Venus  killed by Maori after boat burnt.
1807                 Catherine HAGERTY an escaped convict from NSW.  
1808                11 crew of Parramatta killed when ship sacked.
1809                 70 Europeans killed when the ship the Boyd was sacked and the crew massacred in Whangaroa Harbour,  Northland. one woman, one girl, one boy and a baby spared and later rescued.  Those killed included passengers: Ann GLOSSOP, Catherine BOURKE (or ROURKE), R W WRATHER, James MOORE, John BUDDEN, Robert THOMAS, Mordica MARKS, John PETTY, Thomas MARTIN, William ALLEN, John THOMAS, William MAHONEY, Denis DESMOND.
1810                26 March one sailor from the Inspector and around 60 Maori killed when men from 5 vessels attacked Te Pahi's island, BOI.
1810                Five sealers killed by Maori on Stewart Island.
1815                20 august, 5 crew of brig Trial killed in skirmish with Maori near Thames.Those killed include, Thomas HAYES, John O'NEAL
1817                Otago Harbour, 3 sailors from the Matilda killed by Maori
1818                12 nov Thomas Holloway KING, died of consumption aged 3, Oihi, Bay of Islands.
1820                29 may,  BROWN daughter of Sgt BROWN from the HMS Dromedary. Buried Oihi, Bay of Islands.  
1820                Whangaroa, unknown seaman from HMS Dromedary killed in a brawl by a soldier.
1821                7 nov.  William KEMP aged 30. Buried, Oihi, Bay of Islands.
1822                14 feb.  Silas WEST aged 45 from the Indian. Buried Oihi, Bay of Islands.
1822                feb   WILSON, Chief Mate on the Indian. Buried Oihi, Bay of Islands.
1822                25 apr John SUTHERLAND aged 19 from the Vansittart, buried Oihi, Bay of Islands.
1822                2 may.  Jonathon BAKER aged 23 from the Vansittart. Buried Oihi, Bay of Islands.
1822                7 dec, Thomas KINGHORN aged 30. Buried Oihi, Bay of Islands.  
1822                3 pakeha maori allegedly killed when Hongi attacked Mokoia Pa, Auckland.
1824                april. Captain DAWSON and 6 crew members of the Samuel killed by Maori, Marlborough Sounds.
1826               16 april, Nathaniel Bailey TURNER aged 11 months, Whangaroa Harbour
1826                24 nov, Joseph KING aged 3 years. Buried Oihi, Bay of Islands.  
1827                15 jan, unknown. mate of a vessel anchored in Russell. (intoxication)
1827                May. Hokianga, two crew of the Roslyn Castle drowned when boat capsized in river. One was SHEPHERDSON
1827                nov  4 month old daughter of George CLARKE
1827                16 nov, Harriet SHEPHERD aged 3 ½. Buried Oihi, Bay of Islands.  
1827                seaman drowned Hokianga, buried Mangugnu
1829                3 sailors from the ship Haweis killed and eaten.
1830                March. Dr EVANS. buried Mangugnu
1831                august. son of William and Eliza WHITE aged 6 months
1831                Captain CLARKE of the Hokianga, drowned.
1834                april Thomas WHITE and 11 others killed by Maori, Taranaki in Harriet affair.
1835                Otago, Joseph WELLER of TB.
1838                Captain GATEAU of the French whaler Jean Bart commited suicide , Bay of Islands.
1837                40 crew lost from the French whaling ship Jean Bart, some  killed by Maori in the Chathams and others escaped but never found.
1838                18 March Hokianga, George HOBBS aged 9 months. Son of John and Jane. 
1838                Thomas STYLES, died Hokianga after a fight.
1838                Dr ROSS, Hokianga
1840                August  two infants buried Akaroa. Died at sea on the Comte de Paris.
1840                Wairau massacre. 22 Europeans killed over land disagreement. see list  Wairau Massacre
1841                September, 20 Irish methodist immigrants drowned when the Sophia Pate wrecked on Kaipara bar.
1845                10 March. 13 Europeans killed in fighting at Russell.
1845                April 14 European soldiers killed in battle against Heke
1845                23 June more than 40 British soldiers killed in battle at Ohaeawai Pa against Heke. Included was Lt PHILPOTTS.

 Births  

There were quite a number of "half caste" children born as a result of the early contact of the Europeans and Maori but many of these births were never recorded.

1523            Possible Maori / Portugese children (reference: Beyond Capricorn) 

1799            Johanna H FITZNER (a lady, unmarried) was born about 1799 in NZ according to the 1881 UK census.(perhaps on a whaling vessel?)

About 1800     Bay of Islands. Father unknown. Child seen 1805 during visit by Savage and possibly later by Marsden who met a male halfcaste about 20 years of age.

1804            Mary JONES  (nee ?) born  about 1804 (UK 1881 census)

1812            Jane ROBINSON (nee?) born about 1812 in Wellington.  Who was Jane.? Perhaps she married Joe ROBINSON who was in the Hutt Valley in the 1830's boat building. ( UK 1881 census)

1813            Manton MARTIN born 1813.(UK 1881 census)

1813            John THOMSON about 1813. Later rector of Hemley, Suffolk, England. (UK 1881 census)

1815            Thomas Holloway KING, born 20 feb 1815, Oihi, Bay of Islands. Son of missionaries John  King and Hannah KING nee HANSEN.  

1815            Dinah HALL, 1815 with parents, missionaries, William HALL and Dinah.  

1817            Hannah King HANSEN who was born in Oihi 11th January 1817. Her parents were Thomas HANSEN and Elizabeth and she was a grand daughter to Captain HANSEN.  

 Marriages

There were many relationships between European and Maori from the earliest times of contact. In time a number of formal (christian) marriage ceremonies took place.

23 June 1823. Phillip TAPSELL married to Maria RINGA by Thomas KENDALL.

21 April 1830    Phillip TAPSELL married Karuhi by Rev Samuel MARSDEN
