George Edwin Brooking and Jessie Evelyn Innes


Was a Sth. African War Veteran (s/n 4606 Pvt. 7th Contingent 26 Company, Supplementary Section. Departed 6 Apr 1901 on the Gulf of Tanto, Lt. Colonel Ported in Command.) who also served in the 1914-18 war. (s/n 62001 Pvt. 35th reinforcements B company.) He went to Taranaki at the age of 14 and worked in several dairy factories in South Taranaki and then took up position of manager at the Kapuni Factory. He was later appointed manager of the Tututawa factory, where he stayed for several years. While at Tututawa he served on the local hall and school committees. While he was there the factory brought into use the first mechanical agitator used in a Taranaki Cheese factory.

When he returned from the 1914-18 war he took up farming at Tututawa and stayed there until 1934 when he went to New Plymouth where he was employed on Public Works. In 1940 he joined the RNZAF and as patrolman was stationed at Whenuapai and New Plymouth. He retired to New Plymouth in 1943 and his chief interest in the last years of his life was bowling. He first joined the Fitzroy Bowling Club and later was a member of the New Plymouth Club where he had been a popular figure on the greens for his last eight years.
