When he returned from the 1914-18 war he took up farming at Tututawa and stayed there until 1934 when he went to New Plymouth where he was employed on Public Works. In 1940 he joined the RNZAF and as patrolman was stationed at Whenuapai and New Plymouth. He retired to New Plymouth in 1943 and his chief interest in the last years of his life was bowling. He first joined the Fitzroy Bowling Club and later was a member of the New Plymouth Club where he had been a popular figure on the greens for his last eight years.
