Jonathan Spilsbury and Rebecca Chapman

Jonathan was a well known mezzo-tinto engraver and portrait painter. He was of the Moravian Church and a man of remarkable piety, tall in figure with long white hair and a countenance beaming with gentleness. He is described as attracting the notice of passer-bys in the streets, who would turn to admire him. At home he would work assiduously and silently and then lay aside his tools and pace the room in prayer.

Rebecca early became pious and lived very little at home. She was a frequent visitor at Earl of Chatham's and taught William Pitt mathematics at a very early age.. He would tap at her door and say "Aunty, when are you going to teach me some more Euclid?" She is mentioned in the memoirs of Mrs. Bates, who was as intimate friend of hers. She was a staunch member of the Church of England and for ten years before her marriage, carried on a correspondence with Jonathan on religious subjects, which, however were never discussed after their marriage in a polemical aspect. They agreed to differ. He remained one of the United Brothers, and she a member of the Church of England, but they lived in perfect accord.
