NEW ZEALAND comprises two main Islands, prosaically named the North and South Islands. Climate ranges from sub tropical in the North to temperate in the South, and the terrain is varied.
CHRISTCHURCH is the biggest city in the South Island, with a population just over 300,000. Temperature varies from just below freezing on cold wintry nights to the low to mid twenties (Celsius) during the day in summer, and sometimes even into the thirties.
There is an international airport, and a sea port close by, each with easy road access to the central city.
The terrain is relatively flat although the hills on the southern edge of Christchurch provide spectacular views over the city and Canterbury Plains to the majestic Southern Alps.
Snow is rare in Christchurch, but there are several ski fields only a half hour drive away, making it a popular tourist spot.
