The Speed Mushing Manual: How to Train Racing Sled Dogs
Although much of this book is devoted to preparing a team to race, there's a good deal of information on basic training, conditioning and feeding.
Dog Driver: A Guide for the Serious Musher
Miki Collins, Julie Collins
The title notwithstanding, this is one of the most often recommended books for all types of mushing.
Winterdance : The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod
Fueled by a passion for running dogs, Gary Paulsen entered the Iditarod--the 1150-mile winter sled-dog race between Anchorage and Nome-- in dangerous ignorance and with a fierce determination. Winterdance is his account of this seventeen-day battle against Nature's worst elements and his own frailty.
My Lead Dog Was a Lesbian : Mushing Across Alaska in the Iditarod-The World's Most Grueling Race (Vintage Departures)
Brian Patrick O'Donoghue
O'Donoghue tells what happened when he entered the 1991 Iditarod, along with 17 sled dogs with names like Rainy, Harley and Screech. O'Donoghue braved snowstorms, sickening wipeouts, and endured the contempt of more experienced racers. Narrated with icy elan and self deprecating wit, this is a true story of heroism, cussedness, and astonishing dumb luck.
The Joy of Running Sled Dogs
Noel K. Flanders
The love for nature and my dogs increased 10 fold when I started running sled dogs. The joy of taking my team out at night and running amoung the stars with a small head lamp watching the light sparkel off the thousands of icicles and snowflakes from fresh fallen snow is breath-taking. All of you who have dogs and want to do something just a little different with them will enjoy this book. Anyone can learn to teach their dogs to pull, you don't have to live where there is snow to do this either. Driving a team of dogs from a cart is great! There were no books on the subject when I started so I learned from the (snow up) if you will. By falling off the sled, being drug on my face hanging on for dear life, dog fights and knowing there must be a better way. You are getting all of the tips I spent years learning. I hope you enjoy this little book. I have met a lot of wonderful drivers and they are a great bunch of folks. Remember, if you take life too seriously, it isn't fun any more. Have a great time and enjoy what God has given us-- our beautiful furry friends and the great outdoors. Enjoy, Noel K. Flanders
