Avon River Masterplan

David Sissons Landscape Architect

David offers a wide-ranging landscape consulting service, drawing on his diverse experience in the private and public sectors.

His focus is on the top half of the South Island, an area that he knows intimately. He is very familiar with the landscapes of Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury, including the towns of Nelson, Richmond, Blenheim and Christchurch.  However, he is able to provide consultancy services to clients throughout New Zealand, having expanded his horizons by working for landscape consultants in Auckland and Sydney, as well as for central government in Wellington and local government in Christchurch.

He has a Master's degree in land use economics and a post-graduate diploma in landscape architecture.  A registered member of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects, he specialises in land use planning, open space planning and landscape design.  He has worked extensively in both rural and urban contexts, from high country tenure review to the assessment of inner-city high-rise proposals.   He has given evidence at numerous resource consent and Environment Court hearings.

In recent years he has developed specialist skills in sustainable coastal land management, which he has applied in Nelson and Canterbury.

He has also been exploring heritage landscape management, seeking to integrate the philosophical approach of kaitiakitanga with traditional European heritage perspectives.

These wide-ranging skills enable him to combine the systematic analysis of resources with an imaginative and innovative approach to landscape planning and design.
