Actual Process
The original black and white or colour picture is scanned into a computer, then cropped to any shape, including oval or circular, or can have edges faded away as desired.
Next, the computer divides the picture into the number of squares required and matches each one individually to the nearest of 390 colours in the DMC range. After it selects the most dominant DMC colours, up to the number specified, a complex process then re-analyses the original and matches all squares to those selected DMC colours. Finally, the patterns are colour laser printed on graphed paper with a different symbol for each DMC coloured cotton. A key to each symbol shows its colour, DMC code and an estimate of skeins required.
