Karuna Falls - Holidays 2000

After we left Prana on January 2nd, Michelle, Penny, Jason and I went north to the top of Coromandel to stay at Penny's flatmate Steph's property. Karuna Falls is an eco-village co-op established in 1980. Together about 20 adults and 30 children own a whole valley of former farmland, now re-generating. One day we went for a walk to the actual Falls that the property is named after.

Most of the properties use solar power, have composting toilets, and have permaculture vege and fruit gardens. Some even have woodfire heated bush baths, like this one that Jason is enjoying. I really liked the way they blurred the boundaries between house and garden - Steph's toilet was up in the trees!
On Jan. 3rd I drove to Coromandel town to meet Mum off the ferry from Auckland. That night we had a singing session around the campfire. On Jan. 4th we did the trip over the mountains again to take Penny and Jason to the ferry, and then there were just the three of us. Mainly we went to the local beach, but one day we climbed Moehau.
