Congratulations Hanna Jerezano and Marti Winn (December 2003)

The Purebred stallion Hanna Jerezano (Farino x Jovencita) turned a few heads at the recent All Breeds Inhand Show at Riccarton, Christchurch. Bred by Hanna Stud and now owned by Marti and Murray Winn of Winnfarms Partnership, Jerezano a 16hh grey young stallion took out several top placings in a field of over 100 competitors. Shown by Marti’s trainer Benny Te Haar, Jerezano won the Stallion over 3 year class in the Hack (over 157.5) ring, and also the came first in the Most Suitable for Jumping class. For the latter class, the horses had to go over a jump with their handler and it was Jerezano’s first attempt, which he obviously took on with much gusto and style!
To top things off, he went on to take out Champion Hack and was also Runner up for the overall Supreme Champion of Champions.
Congratulations Jerezano, Marti and Benny, hopefully more successes will follow!

New PRE mare arrived at Hanna PRE Stud (May 2004)
The lovely PRE mare, Alondra XXIX, arrived at Hanna PRE Stud from Debbie Galletly in Queensland Australia. Alondra XXIX is by the now deceased stallion Dacio III out of the Hortelano VII daughter Manuka Mistica. She scored over 80 points at the 2001 Spanish revision round and has been the dam of three beautiful male offspring so far. The oldest, a breeding stallion in Queensland, the second a future stud colt at Mayica Stud in South Australia and her 2003 foal having been purchased by Berwick Farm, Cambridge, NZ.
We are extremely proud to having been given the chance to secure this mare for our breeding programme. Alondra stands at 160cm, has straight, big movement and so far has thrown foals of very good height.
She is the only immediate daughter by Dacio III in New Zealand.

10 YEAR HISTORY

This year marks the ten-year anniversary of Hanna PRE Stud. It was in January 1994 that the foundation stallion Farino arrived in NZ from Australia and was to become the basis for the stud’s breeding operation for the next decade.

Hanna PRE Stud started out in Palmerston North, initially concentrating on producing partbred Spanish Sporthorses by crossing the Pure Spanish Stallion Farino over mainly TB, warmblood and AngloArab mares. However, the arrival of Farino was soon followed by the acquisition of purebred mares commencing the gradual expansion and transition to the stud’s commitment to the breeding of purebred Spanish horses.

Owners, Philip Barrett and Sabina Holle, subsequently undertook several visits to breeding farms and large international breed shows in Spain, in addition to attending several specialised breed seminars in Australia, USA and Spain, to increase their knowledge and expertise of the PRE horse.
It took another eight years of research and forging contacts overseas before another three foundation PRE mares were sourced. The most recent addition only arrived in May this year. At the same time, the stud moved to the Waikato and more recently to South Auckland, just outside Waiuku.
For the last five years, Hanna Stud has dedicated their efforts solely on breeding purebred Spanish horses. However, Farino’s partbred offspring have proven themselves in open competition, winning Championships in led and ridden classes.

Sabina grew up surrounded by warmblood horses in her native Germany and has handled, trained and competed a variety of horse breeds over the years. “The phantastic temperament of the purebred Spanish horse has completely won me over, both from the aspect of daily handling to riding them”, says Sabina. “I have never come across a breed with such an honest and kind temperament, and at the same time being very intelligent, quick and sensitive. If you combine all this with the willingness to cooperate and please, you end up with a wonderful horse. This breed has given me so much pleasure and enjoyment over the years, handling stallions, colts, mares and fillies in an everyday environment and training them under saddle. To me they are the ultimate riding horse and also companion.” “ Not everyone is an Olympic or international dressage or showjumping rider, and most people primarily want a horse that is fundamentally kind and willing but athletic enough to do all kinds of pleasure riding but also some competition. For me the purebred Spanish horse combines all these attributes. In addition, they are very easy to keep, easy on your feed and farrier bill and gentle on your pasture, very hardy and healthy, and do not need to be ridden or educated on a daily basis in order to be manageable. All they need is a kind understanding and perceptive attitude from their owner and they will give their all.”

Sabina and Philip are thrilled to see that even in countries outside continental Europe, riders are starting to take note of the competitive successes of the PRE horse, which is growing every year. Sparked by the early successes at the Atlanta Olympics by Spanish dressage rider Ignacio Ramblas on Evento, and the Silver Medal for the Spanish Dressage Team at the WEG in Jerez de la Frontera, and the recent successes at Hickstead the signs are set for more successes of PRE horses at the upcoming Olympics. The Spanish government has taken a very proactive approach to the breeding evaluation of their nationally treasured breed and has enabled countries outside of Europe to be part of their studbook and breeding classification process in an attempt to further improve their breed. NZ PRE horses are all part of this system since 2001.

At Hanna PRE Stud, Sabina and Philip are fully committed to this process and feel that their initial results speak for themselves. Hanna PRE youngstock has been exported to other breeders in the USA and interest from both Australia and USA for future offspring is steadily increasing. The stud’s breeding stock has been presented to and classified by the Spanish studbook officials during the visits in 2001 and 2003 with extremely positive feedback to the direction of our breeding programme.

After this successful first decade what is in stock for the future? Philip and Sabina have recently imported a young colt from Australia, Alma Director, to take over as main breeding stallion from October 2004. The plan is to use him over our breeding mares as well as the fillies by our foundation stallion Farino as part of the studs improvement programme. Additionally, breeding shares to a colt imported from the USA, Cancionero CA, owned by South Auckland equine surgeon Andrea Ritmeester and her partner Mark Walton, have been purchased and this colt, once old enough will also be used extensively. His bloodlines are impeccable, being the grandson of the “Lion of Spain” – Indiano XVIII. This colt should add size and substance to the already well-grown PRE horses of Hanna Stud.

The aim is to attract people in NZ to consider to breed or purchase a purebred Spanish horse to get a type that can be used in competition and for every day pleasure riding. Purebred horses should show good size and have movement with elevation, elasticity and scope, all this can be achieved whilst retaining the looks, type and temperament that mark this breed unique.

Farino will still remain an important part of Hanna Stud’s breeding programme, and will also be available to outside mares, even if he is not the main sire animal of the stud any longer. Without Farino, Hanna Stud would not be were it is today. “Stallions are animal that tend to bond very closely with their owner in addition of being creatures of comfort and routine. During the last 10 years Farino has developed such a strong bond with us, that I could never subject him to a foreign environment now that he is of advanced age. This would feel like betraying a good friend, using him and then, when he is no longer wanted, showing him the cold shoulder and asking him to leave. You don’t do that to a good friend and should not do this to any animal which has been your companion and business partner for such a long time.”

Hanna PRE Stud, with Alma Director, Farino and Cancionero CA is looking forward to at least another decade of successful breeding of beautiful talented PRE horses.
