THE POST OFFICE
After
we arrived on the North Island as part of our first trip there, we hopped into
the rental car and headed for the first little town where we thought we could
get some real breakfast! [The muffins at the airport left a little to be
desired!] Many of the villages in New Zealand are very similar! They
are clean with all the homes nestled around their respective gardens. The
"City Center" is usually a single street with a few round-a-bouts. The
streets are lined with shops with an overhang from the buildings providing cover
for the sidewalks. You can invariably find a shoppe that sells good coffee
and an all day breakfast!
Onehunga
was the first village we went through on the drive to Auckland. It is very
quaint and picturesque and at the end of the main drag was an old Post Office
that had been converted into a coffee shoppe! Our first impression was
good and so we went in. They served a fantastic breakfast! We
actually got our first bagel since leaving North America. I ordered a
toasted bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese! [Capers aren't
traditional here!] It was really good! I turned Laura onto bagels
and Lox and cream cheese. She was a little surprised to learn that we
often enjoy these up at The Stone Duck, especially when Federico is
there! [I'll get her to like it up there yet!!] The Post Office
sells great Columbian coffee and had an array of interesting Spanish and French
espresso machines for sale. There was one I really liked, a stove top
espresso machine, but it was several hundred dollars and I thought this would be
too much for a souvenir! Besides, I needed some new socks!
This place is certainly worth a stop for anyone passing through Onehunga, New Zealand! Lunch and dinner also looks good. The assortment of cakes are also worthy of a stop over for afternoon tea!
