P L A C E S I F R E Q U E N T
Mozillazine.org - The Mozilla Magazine
This is the place to go for easily consumable, up to the minute news about
Mozilla, the open-source project responsible for creating the next version
of Netscape Navigator (5.0). Includes discussion forums, links etc.
Slashdot - News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters
News on the latest computer stuff, tidbits, massive discussion forums.
This page is tarted more towards Linux users than those of Microsoft
Windows 95, but its still an interesting read.
The Onion - America's Number One News Source
A laugh a minute. Corny news has never been quite this good. Headlines such
as "Republicans demands Monica Re-blow Clinton on Senate floor" and
"Clinton takes leave of absence to wait in line for Star Wars Part I"
Stay up to date, read the Onion.
ABCNews.com - Real News
My favourite news site. Lots of multimedia for those blessed with faster
connections, good news, graphics, etc.
Allaire - Software Publisher
The company responsible for Allaire HomeSite and ColdFusion Go. Download.
ZDNet - Mystical Publishing Giant
Lots of net news. Lots of software and hardware reviews. Lots of stuff. The
only problem is that the damned thing is often slow and loads wrong.
Download.com - Free Shit
Well not quite, although you can find a lot of stuff here. I'm not a fan
of C|Net as a lot of their articles are more than a little bubble brained,
and they're very much in bed with Microsoft.
PC World NZ - Local PC rag
I both love and hate this magazine. I get it every month. It has strangely
addictive properties, despite the fact that a good deal of the content
is from the thicker US version, and they have far too many references to
Star Trek for my liking. Also, their idea of "budget scanners" leaves something
to be desired. Nevertheless, there are some good local stories, and the
Dumb Terminal page is good for a laugh (except the lame Star Trek stuff ;P)
Hotbot - Search Engine
Very underrated search engine. Its my favourite. It doesn't always return
the results I want, but it also doesnt return a zillion hits all from
the same server like Alta Vista does.
Webreference.com - Webdesign Resource
A very large, very good webdesign site. Loads of tutorials, examples,
widgets, splidgets and splogets.
Devedge - Netscape Developer Site
Netscape's huge developer resource, contains a huge number of pages and
demos display Netscape Navigator 4.0's (rather weak) scripting ability, but
also includes a useful, downloadable JavaScript 1.3 reference.
SiteBuilder Workshop - Microsoft Webdesign Resource
One of the best CSS resources around, if you happen to like Microsoft. This
is of course, tailored towards Microsoft Internet Explorer. But the site is
so damned usable its instantly likeable. Navigation of the immense CSS
and DHTML resource is easy, intuitive and a pleasure to use. You'll want
to make sure you're using IE4+ when you visit this, as it doesnt like
any version of Netscape Navigator.
MSDN Online - Microsoft Developer Network
This folks, is the mother load when it comes to Windows programming.
Includes the gargantuan MSDN Library, which contains details of the
Microsoft Foundation Classes, manuals for the Visual Studio tools (for
those people who broke their MSDN CD, want updates, or pirated it)
Warning: If you've got the actual MSDN CD, use that instead. The Java
applet for the menu is a little slow and using the HTML Help docs on the
CD is much faster. Besides, the CD has search and bookmark ability.
Also, the library isn't a tutorial. To actually create anything with
Visual C++, you'll need classes or a good book.
Trade & Exchange - Trading Mag
Eat this, Ebay. Okay, so the T&E isn't exactly an auction site, nor does
it represent online trading, its just an online edition of their $2.50
print edition which comes out on Mondays and Thursdays. Its better than
Ebay because its local, and has a print edition readily available for those
times when my eyes get screen burn, or I want to draw on it. Probably not
of much interest unless you live in New Zealand (especially Auckland)
Linux Server @ Dept of Electronic Engineering, Auckland University
Some useful Linux software, links to other good linux resources whose
addresses I can't remember since I'm in Win95, not Linux, and I don't
have my bookmarks on me.
Mozilla.org - The Mozilla Project
Despite what the retards at C|Net say, Netscape 5.0, whenever it is eventually
released, will absolutely bury Internet Explorer 5.0 when
it comes to standards support. Mozilla.org is the headquarters of the open
source development project. If you're a code guru and can figure out
Netscape's weird idea of C++, this place will be a dream. It makes my
head hurt.
For everyone else however, there are articles outlining exciting new
features supposedly supported by Netscape 5.0, including downloadable
skins/themes that have the ability to completely change the appearance
of the browser, faster page rendering, file system integration, etc.
Also available are Milestone releases (binaries that you can download,
install and run), and nightly builds. Yes, you can test the new lizard
yourself!
Craccum - Auckland University Student Magazine
A weekly does of insanity, student news, a few interesting ads, columns,
all the usual stuff. Numbered backwards. Must be the work of Satan.
