The armigerious Cradock family of Richmondshire is well documented, and several pedigrees have been published. This family is said to have ‘come out of Staffordshire’, and indeed, there are records of a family there bearing the same arms.
The printed pedigrees begin with Richard Cradocke who was living in 1501. He had three known sons, Richard, William and Thomas. Little is known of Richard and his family except that his grandson John ‘went into Doe Park’ and was married to Alice TEMPEST of Holmside, Lanchester, Durham. Doe Park is an estate which still exists, not far from Romaldkirk in Yorkshire, although the present house was built in 17th century.
John and Alice had a son John, also of Doe Park, who married Elizabeth RAYNE of Thringarth.
From this point the records are more detailed and the family can be easily traced in parish records.
John Cradocke, son of John Cradocke and Elizabeth Rayne, married Anne LATUS and lived at Newhouses, Baldersdale, a small village just out of Romaldkirk. John had three sons; William, John, and Anthony. John was buried 15 Jun 1604 at Gainford where his son was vicar at that time.
William Cradocke, son of John, and Anne Latus. William married Jane JORDON, 28 Nov 1590 in Romaldkirk and they had a large family, whose descendants lived in that town for several generations. One son, Anthony, married Margaret WHRIGHT of Barnard Castle, and settled there. Their descendents lived there for many generations.
A great deal of work has been done on this family, including the branches which moved to Sedgefield, Staindrop, Bishop Auckland, and Durham, all within Durham County.
Details coming shortly.
