Cradock of Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle was a chapelry in the parish of Gainford, County Durham, England, but is now a parish in its own right.  It is located on the river Tees.

3. Anthony CRADOCK  was the son of William and his wife Jane JORDAN, bp  21 Mar 1596, Romaldkirk,  married 7 May 1623, to Margaret WHRIGHT,  buried: 11 Feb 1679, Barnard Castle, Durham, England.   Anthony buried: 11 Feb 1682, Barnard Castle.

      i Agnes CRADOCK bp 11 Sep 1625, Barnard Castle.
      ii Mary CRADOCK bp  2 Dec 1627, Barnard Castle, buried 21 Sep 1629, Barnard Castle
      iii William CRADOCK bp 24 Aug 1630, Barnard Castle
      iv Mary CRADOCK bp12 Mar 1633, Barnard Castle, married William DOBSON.
      v Margaret CRADOCK bp 21 Dec 1635, Barnard Castle,  married William DAYLE.    She was named as administrator for fathers estate 1682.
      vi Elizabeth CRADOCK bp 10 Mar 1639, Barnard Castle, Durham, England.

Although some of the daughters of this family married and had children, there are no known Craddock descendants.


It is not known who the parents of Christopher were, as the first record I can find about him is his marriage in 1639, but as Barnard Castle was quite a small town, and at that time the Cradocks were very localised in this area, it is likely that he was related to all the others here.

2. Tobie CRADDOCK bp 4 Nov 1641, Barnard Castle, married 28 May 1668, in Barnard Castle, Magdalen ATKIN.  Tobie  buried: 13 Apr 1703, Barnard Castle.

3. Joseph CRADDOCK bp  27 Dec 1646, Barnard Castle, occupation weaver, married 13 May 1674, in Barnard Castle to  Jane LANGSTAFFE.  Joseph died abt 1712, Barnard Castle.   Will dated 1712, Barnard Castle, names him as Joseph 'the elder' of Barnard Castle.  Left money to John DINSDALE in his will, relationship not given.  I have a copy of this will.

      ii Ruth CRADDOCK bp 15 Jul 1677, Barnard Castle, probably died bef 1712.  Not mentioned in her fathers will dated 1712, but no burial found.
      iii Mary CRADDOCK bp  29 Jan 1680, Barnard Castle,  buried: 1 Jun 1682, Barnard Castle.
      iv Dorothy CRADDOCK bp 30 Dec 1683, Barnard Castle.  Probably the Dorothy who married Robert RICHARDSON 13 Jul 1720 Barnard Castle.  Mentioned in her fathers will dated 1712.

Third Generation

4. Christopher CRADDOCK bp  28 Jan 1670, Barnard Castle, married 26 Apr 1694, in Romaldkirk, Yorkshire, England, Margarett BOLDRON, buried: 8 Dec 1732, Barnard Castle.  Christopher buried: 27 Jun 1735, Barnard Castle.
    Children:
      i Christopher CRADDOCK bp 22 Apr 1696, Startforth, Yks, England.  Believed to belong to this family, but not proven.  Startforth is very close to Barnard Castle.
    6. ii Anthony born abt 1697.
      iii Sarah CRADDOCK bp 6 Aug 1699, Barnard Castle, buried: 31 Dec 1749, Barnard Castle.
      iv William CRADDOCK bp 31 May 1701, possibly buried: 31 May 1745, Barnard Castle.  Burial recorded which seems to be this William.
      v Robert CRADDOCK bp 1 Oct 1702, Barnard Castle.
    7. vi Joseph born abt 1705.
      vii Mary CRADDOCK bp 10 May 1705, Barnard Castle,  married 12 Aug 1736, in Barnard Castle, to Robert PADON.

6. Anthony CRADDOCK bp 25 Nov 1697, Barnard Castle, married Elizabeth, date and place unknown.  Evidence surrounding this family is weak.  Dates and names fit and it is feasible that they moved from Barnard Castle - Whorlton - Barnard Castle - Staindrop - Bowes. These towns are all in very close proximity to each other.   A comprehensive study of all Craddocks in North Yorkshire and Durham in this time period has positively identified almost all individuals that have been mentioned in the records.  Most individuals have baptism, marriage, are named in baptism of children, and burials.  Most family groups are quite clear and easy to follow.  After the baptisms of the following children and the subsequent marriage of Anthony (below), there are no further records for any of them in this entire region and it appears that the family moved elsewhere.  If you have further evidence or any other explanation, I would be pleased to hear it.

      vi William CRADDOCK bp 21 Dec 1729, Staindrop, Durham.  Believed to belong to this family.
      vii Christopher CRADDOCK bp 1 Feb 1732, Bowes, Yorkshire.  Believed to belong to this family, and possibly the Christopher who was buried in Grinton, Yorkshire in 1771. (See further explanation below).
      viii George CRADDOCK bp 19 Aug 1733, Bowes, Yks, England.  Believed to belong to this family.
 

Fifth Generation

9. Anthony CRADDOCK bp 24 Apr 1728, Staindrop, Durham, England, believed to be the son of the Anthony and Elizabeth named above, married 2 Sep 1754, in Barnard Castle, to Elianor EMERSON, it is possible that Elianor died after the birth of her daughter 1755 in Barnard Castle, though no burial has yet been found for her.
    Children:
      i Elizabeth CRADDOCK bp 12 Sep 1755, Barnard Castle, Durham, England.  Possibly the Elizabeth who later married John Hutchinson in Redmire, Yorkshire.

After this baptism I have been unable to find any further evidence of Anthony, or any of his brothers in this region.  They do not marry, appear as fathers at baptisms, nor have any burials been found.  It appears that the entire family moved elsewhere.

It was a short time after this, that the first Craddocks appear in the church records in the Wensleydale and Swaledale area.  Although I have no proof, I believe that they are the above brothers.  It seems too much to be a co-incidence that suddenly men with the names of Thomas, Tobias, Anthony and Christopher, appeared in the Grinton Parish Records shortly after men with the same names vanished from Barnard Castle.  I have attempted to show my logic below -

Thomas baptised in 1719 Barnard Castle,  married in 1743 Grinton to Sara Atkinson, buried 1746 Grinton.  If this is correct, Thomas would have been about 24 years old at time of his marriage.

Tobias, bp 1724 Barnard Castle, married Alice Hillary 1748 Grinton.  He would also have been aged 24.

Anthony,  bp 1728 Staindrop, m Elianor Emmerson 1754 Barnard Castle, daughter Elizabeth baptised 1755 Barnard Castle, then nothing more in that area, though I suggest that Elianor died around 1755.  An Anthony married in Grinton, first Elizabeth who was buried 1759 shortly before the burial of her first child; he then married six months later to Isabel Winter also in Grinton.  Anthony and Isabel's third child was named Emmerson.   The naming of a child Emmerson in Grinton, and the marriage in Barnard Castle to a wife whose surname was also Emmerson seems too much to be co-incidence.
