Specialist Education Service

Specialist Education Services (SES) has contracts with the Ministry of Education, ACC, Income Support and, other funders to undertake assessments, and to advise on programmes and support, for children and youth with high needs. SES employs registered psychologists, speech and language therapists, advisers on deaf children, early intervention advisers and teachers, special education advisers, education support workers, kaitakawaenga, parent educators and administration staff. Field staff work in one or more of these teams: behaviour and learning, communication, inclusive services and early intervention.

In April 1998 SES employed 169 psychologists in 145 fulltime equivalent positions. The salary scale for registered psychologists $40 000 to $60 000. Applicants for positions have typically come from university Diploma in Educational Psychology post-graduate programmes following teaching experience. The changing needs of the organisation have led to a broadening of the recruitment base and SES now employs clinical psychologists and provides supervised practicum experience for registration.
