Department of Corrections Psychological Service

The Department of Corrections manages sentences, imposed by the courts, through prisons and community-based sentences such as periodic detention, and provides information to judges to assist them in sentencing offenders. The Department's 3500 staff, working in eight services and groups, has a shared goal of reducing re-offending. The Psychological Service is one of those services. It comprises 80 staff nation-wide, employing approximately 60 psychologists. We operate from 11 locations, and provide services to offenders from Whangarei to Invercargill.

Psychological Service carries out the following roles:

- Provides specialist psychological counselling, assessment and treatment to offenders on behalf of both Community Probation and the Public Prisons Service

- Provides a treatment programme in three Special Prison Units, two for child sex offenders, Te Piriti and Kia Marama and one for violent offenders. These units provide group-based, long term treatment to small groups of offenders

- Prepares psychological reports on offenders for the Parole Board, District Prison Boards, Courts, Community Probation Service and Public Prison Service

- Undertakes research to contribute to service development within the Department, and to improve the Service's own clinical programmes

Professional development is a key focus of our service, and this is reflected in the opportunity to advance through a competency based remuneration system, which is directly linked to well resourced training programmes. Registered Psychologists can take advantage of a salary package incorporating performance payments, which ranges from $41,250 to $62,200.

Our Department recognises the status of Maori as tangata whenua and its responsibilities to deliver equal employment opportunities. Therefore knowledge and understanding of Nga Tikanga Maori is an important aspect in the Service's work.
