“MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR”

                                                 from all on your Committee.

Our Summer Show & Garden Competition have been

and gone. We only have one more function together

this current year, our Christmas Luncheon.

Thinking back over the past year, many people have contributed in so many ways to the operation of the Society. Without their help there would not be a Society. I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all. To Bob Duncan our Patron, the Committee, who are tireless in their endeavours no matter what the task, the workers on the Trading Table and those who donated to the table. The kitchen crew and those who donated baking etc. The raffle donors and those who sell and compile the raffles. Our newsletter runners who keep fit keeping you up to date. The energetic band of folk who put up and dismantle hall equipment, the Show Steward, Chief Steward and other stewards who keep us on the straight & narrow. Those people who research and organise day trips and those who provide us with an annual holiday where we can leave the dishes in the sink and forget our worries. The librarian’s who monitor our books. The Garden Competition organiser, our newspaper scribe, Secretary and Treasurer and all those loyal members who attend rain hail or snow, encouraging us all to feel our jobs are worthwhile. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

IMPORTANT NOTICE! (shades of  December 2004 newsletter)

Venue Change! For Christmas Luncheon. Again there is a problem at the Whangaparaoa Golf Club. (the last time we place a booking with them) Our reservation has been cancelled. However Jo Moxey has been able to get a reservation at Rotary House, next to the Silverdale Rugby Club.

Details are: Monday 5th December, 12 for 12:30pm (date unchanged)

Cost: $25:00ea. Non-alcoholic punch supplied. NO BAR – B.Y.O. Plenty of parking. Phone bookings to Dawn Birchall. 426:8996. Anyone requiring transport ring Jo Moxey, 424:0093.

New Members. A warm welcome to Murray & Vicki Groves of Stanmore Bay and Dr. Lockwood Smith. Also returning to our membership is John Laan, who will be remembered by many members, who has just lost his wife, Mary, who he had nursed through her long illness.

Summer Show. As you entered the Hall the wonderful fragrance hit you. From the magnificent display of Roses, the best since 1997, through the Hall it was a sea of colour. Overall we had 544 show entries, including 63 in the children’s section. Floral Art however was down on last year. In total we were up on last years 488 entries. Well Done Everyone!

Door takings were $468:00, Trading Table $424:00, Raffles $243:00, Kitchen $164:00.

Our thanks to Dr. Lockwood Smith, who opened the Show, (and also became a member)Bob Duncan who presented the  trophies and to Judy Fyfe, who stepped in to help me out while I was ill, by drawing of the Raffles & closing the Show. I believe that the dismantling of the hall fixtures after the Show must have been a record, 30 minutes after the closing, it was all stored in order and the hall cleaned.   A great effort by everyone!

Once again it was disappointing that the majority of people viewing the Show were non-members. Only 81of our members attended.

In the children’s section it was good to see new exhibitors from the Home Schooling and The Pippins as well as Rainbow School. There were a few baskets left at the hall after the show, ring Jill: 424:8189 to claim same. Our thanks to all those who donated goods for the Annual Show and Christmas Luncheon Raffles, the hampers looked great.

Annual Garden Competition. Entries were down on last year from 64 to 45. The feed back from Jill is that a lot of previous entrants have become disgruntled due to the same people winning each year. The Committee have discussed the situation, and although no action has been taken, feel that perhaps changing to Bi-Annual Competition may help solve the problem. We are delighted to report that although the numbers are down there were a number of new entrants. The judges remarked that it was obviously the entrants had put a lot of time and effort into preparing their gardens.

A new trophy has been presented to the Society by Cath & Frank McCullough, to be known as the ‘Merit Award’ for the ‘Most Improved Garden’ judged from those who have previously entered and not won an award.

Again this year we would like to thank Ngarie & Bob Duncan for making their delightful garden available for picnic lunch on the ‘Tour of Winning Gardens’.

Delicious Daylilies.

Although daylilies have been eaten in Asia for centuries, their culinary virtues have only recently been widely discovered in the west. Buds & flowers are the parts usually eaten, adding colour and flavour to salads or they can be cooked.

They have a lettuce like flavour and are high in several important vitamins, with almost as much protein as spinach, more vitamin A than beans and about the same amount of vitamin C as orange juice.

According to chefs, yellow and pastel coloured flowers have the best flavour, reds tending to be more bitter. Fragrant daylily cultivars may taste sweeter than unscented ones.

Daylily buds may be used fresh or dried. For cooking they are best picked about two days before they are due to open. It is usual to remove the antlers and stamens from the flowers before using them. Why not try them even if only for decoration.

Virile Vegetables.

What Viagra does is impotent men, it can also do for cut flowers, fruits and vegetables says Yaacov Leshem, a plant physiologist at Israel’s Bar-Ilam University.

The researcher claims that the lifespan of plants can be as much as doubled with a dose of Viagra.

He found that 2 or 3 milligrams dissolved in water helps slow down the emission of ethylene, a hormone that leads to spoilage in plants.

“Plants are not all that different from people” Leshem said, adding with a straight face that “it helps them stay erect” Footnote: an expensive solution to a problem.

Have a great Christmas & New Year.

Be careful out there and we will see you all in the New Year.

HAPPY GARDENING.
