Scottish Ancestry Site Goes Live
If you've ever considered journeying to Scotland in search of your roots, a new Web site can
show you how to make it happen. Ancestral Scotland at http://www.ancestralscotland.com
launched this week. Learn where to begin the search, where to stay, whom to contact and
relevant places to visit. Travelling to Scotland is simple with the current, accurate information
you'll find on the site. If you're still sketching out your family tree, you can search the site by
surname, parish or place. You'll quickly discover where your ancestors lived. Old photos,
history lessons and a calendar of events add to the site's useful information.

Scots Origins new data
The 1901 census is now available online, with images of the original returns, so that for
Scotland users now have access to three census years: 1901, 1891 – both with images –
and 1881. The index records for the 1900 births and marriage records and 1925 death
records have now been uploaded, bringing the total number of index records now
available on Scots Origins to over 36 million.

Origins.net (www.origins.net) is pleased to announce the Scots Origins
Sighting Service on Scots Origins (http://www.scotsorigins.com/  ) is now back up
and running.
When the service was launched in September 2002, we received a far greater
number of sighting requests than we had anticipated, and neither ourselves
nor the researchers in Edinburgh were able to fulfil all orders within the
5 day stated period. We had therefore suspended the service whilst we
worked on improving the site so we wouldn't be faced with another backlog
of orders.
At present we are not taking requests for 1861 and 1871 Census searches.
You can, however, order details of entries in the old parish registers and
the statutory registers for Scotland of births and marriages from 1700 up
to 1990 and deaths from 1855 to 1990.
Each search undertaken is charged at £8 (approx $12 USD). There is a
minimum search fee of £4, and where an order can't be fulfilled because
the requested record cannot be found, a refund will be issued for £4.
If full details of a search are not known, you can request a quote
(usually between £8/$12USD -£30/$46) and then decide if you wish the name
to be researched, knowing beforehand how long you will have to wait until
they receive the transcription details. We are now estimating that all
accepted searches will be completed within 10 days. For more details about
the sighting service, please go to:
http://www.scotsorigins.com/sighting.aspx

Previous Downloads
By agreement with the General Register Office for Scotland, the Previous
Downloads Service is available again for a limited period. The Previous
Downloads Service will be available until 21st January 2003 (to midday
GMT). Users who wish to have continued access to their downloads for
personal use only, are advised to copy these onto their computers.

Major Improvement to the IGI Search Facility on Scots Origins
"Scots Origins now offer the greatest flexibility for IGI searches!"
(Sherry Irvine, president of the Association of Professional Genealogists.)
The original indexes to the Old Parish Registers were captured by teams led by the
Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU), and are included within the International
Genealogical Index (IGI) accessible on the Family Search web site. The IGI has
indexes to over 90% of the birth and marriage OPRs, and
often you will find both birth date and baptism date included there, while the
GROS index almost invariably has only one or the other.
Origins users accessing the IGI search on Scots Origins can now retrieve search
results for all names in one particular county and district, by entering the surname only.

Alternatively, if someone wishes to view all the names in a particular
parish in a year, this is also now possible on the Scots Origins IGI
search. Simply type in the year and parish required and results will be
retrieved for all names in that parish in the year chosen.

The GSU also indexed the Statutory Register entries for births and
marriages up to 1875. A major advantage of the IGI birth index records is the
presence of parents' names; this has been a major weakness in the GROS index.
Also, the IGI index has the full date of the event, rather than just the year.

Origins users accessing the IGI search on Scots Origins can now retrieve search
results for all names in one particular county and district, by entering the surname
only. Alternatively, if you wish to view all the names in a particular parish in a year,
this is also now possible on the Scots Origins IGI search. Simply type in the year
and parish required and results will be retrieved for all names in that parish in the
year chosen.

Full details of the enhanced IGI searching can be found at:

My name is Helen Leggatt, I live in Scotland, UK and I run a website called
Ancestors Reunited.  I work with genealogists here in the UK, providing them
with photographs to enhance their research, and since being featured in 19
Canadian newspapers, Scotland on Sunday newspaper, a live BBC Radio 4 interview and a
feature in BBC Scotland I now have many enquiries from all over the world from people who
wish to have a photograph of their ancestors final resting place.
I have a network of over 200 professional photographers across the UK and
provide photographs of gravestones (including transcriptions of inscriptions),
churches or any other scene that a family history researcher might require.
We also operate a unique service called the Waiting Room which allows people to
add themselves to a database of others who want photographs in a particular
town/church - this means they can keep the price of photography to a minimum by
sharing the cost with others.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
There's no doubt that Scotlandspeople is a
great and useful site, but it has one irritating characteristic - you can have
credits left, but can't use them unless you have visited in the last 24 or 48 hours,
without buying more credits. However, there is a way around this (Internet
Explorer 6 - haven't tried it in other browsers).
Say your search on OPR births (just for example) has found 10 pages of data,
but you've only accessed one. Go to your "Previous Searches" list, which you can
see again without paying. Click on the search you want to see the rest of. It will
show you the results page you have visited previously. Try to access the next page
(or any other page) in that search and you will first get a message saying you have
to buy more credits, then you are bounced to the "Your Session Has Expired" page.
At this point you would normally have to buy more credits. If you press you
browser's Back button, you stay on the
same page. But click on the little Down arrow next to Back and choose the page
second down in the list (which will be something like "Welcome to the
official etc, etc...)
When you get to that page, Refresh your browser and you will see the "new"
page of your search at the head of searches list. Click on it, and you're in!
You still get charged one credit, so nobody's getting cheated, and it only works
on previous searches. But it does remove the irksome "session limit" criterion.
Perhaps if everyone did this it would persuade Scotlandspeople to remove that
annoying condition and let us use our remaining credits any time we want.
Trust that's useful

Colonsay today is arguably the most isolated community in Great Britain and has barely
one hundred inhabitants; yet at its peak, in 1841, Colonsay had a population of almost
one thousand people. During the 18th and 19th centuries many of the inhabitants moved
away to seek a new life in the New World. The earliest emigrants went to North Carolina,
and others went to Prince Edward Island, to Bruce County, to Manitoulin Island and into
Saskatchewan. It is believed that some also went to Australia.

New CD available in NZ
Those members who are researching in Argyll may be interested in a new CD
'Argyll Courts' compiled by Frank Bigwood, husband of Rosemary Bigwood who
was keynote speaker at the NZSG conference in 2001.

It is $15 and available from Graham Jones, 139 Hokianga Road, Dargaville,
0300  or  gee.jay@xtra.co.nz

Re 'Argyll Courts' :
The main Court of the county of Argyll in the 18th and early 19th century
was the Sheriff Court, but there were several other Courts which existed
alongside the Sheriff Court with a more limited jurisdiction. The surviving
records of these Courts have only recently come to light .

These Calendars which Frank has worked on are intended to give those
interested in Argyll a summary of the contents of the papers and except in
the cases where the lists are very long, the names of the people involved.

The five Courts on the disk are
1. The Commissary Court of Argyll
2. The Vice-Admiral Court of Argyll
3. The Justice of the Peace Court of the County of Argyll
4. The Burgh of Campbelltown
5. The Burgh court of Inveraray

Graham says re 'Argyll Courts' The files are all in .pdf format so you will
need Acrobat Reader to look at them. Frank has included a copy of the reader
on the CD. If you don't already have v.5 load the one on the CD as it
includes a full search facility. Very handy if you want to search the whole
CD at once.

Please consult Graham Jones for more details if required.

Hugh Wallis writes:
I have just uploaded my Scotland IGI Middle Name index at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis. This adds Scotland to
the English counties for which I have created such an index.

I believe that middle names are an invaluable resource for finding clues to
family relationships. Strangely I have seen very little written about their
use as research pointers in any of the literature, nor have I seen this
issue discussed much on the mailing lists. I have not seen any middle name
indexes or search tools available anywhere either. BUT - often a person's
middle name is the same as the maiden name of their mother or a grandmother
or reflects some other familial connection (maybe the name of a patron or
benefactor). It may also be the father's surname for births occurring out of
wedlock. It seems obvious to me, therefore, that they have significant value
in genealogical and family history research.

EXPERT ADVICE: CHECKLIST FOR FINDING SCOTTISH CHURCH
RECORDS
* Scottish Church Records index. This source indexes  all pre-1855 baptisms and marriages
from the parish  registers of the Church of Scotland. It also indexes baptisms and marriages
from some nonconformist  registers. The Scottish Church Records index is available for use
at no charge at Family History Centers in a DOS version on CD. You can also search this
database for a fee on the Scots Origins Web site.
* Old Parochial Registers on microfiche. The  microfiche indexes are arranged by county.
* International Genealogical Index.
* Vital Records Index--British Isles.
* National Burial Register of Scotland. At the time of  this writing, this resource is in progress.
In the  meantime, to find burial indexes contact the family  history society in the area where
your ancestor  lived.
* Computer (parish register) printouts.
* Microfilm of original parish registers of the Church  of Scotland. Learn what records exist
by consulting V. Ben Bloxham's, "Key to the Parochial Registers of  Scotland." This book
also lists FHL film numbers,  but the numbers listed are for the first filming  (old films) of
the registers. Search the Family
History Library Catalogue to find the new film numbers for a parish. To search the FHL
Catalogue, either search by film number using the old film numbers
or search by place using the name of the parish.
* Look for other records of the Church of Scotland in  the kirk session records inventory
(CH 2) on FHL  microfiche 6084820. To find the parish you want, use  the index on FHL
fiche 6084821.
* If you do not find your ancestor in the records of  the Church of Scotland, use the
Statistical Accounts of Scotland on the Internet at
http://edina.ac.uk/cgi/StatAcc/StatAcc.cgi or  Groome's "Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland"
(FHL fiche  numbers 6020391-6020411) to determine the denominations of other
churches in the area.
* Consult the Parish and Vital Records List to see  which nonconformist churches have
already been extracted and indexed. Order parish register  printouts.
* Search the Family History Library Catalog to see if  other nonconformist records
are available on  microfilm. Order microfilmed records.
* Check the inventory of nonconformist records held at the National Archives of Scotland
to see what else is available. The inventories are on FHL microfiche
numbers 6084809 and 6084816-6084819. The inventory of Roman Catholic Records
(RH 21) is on microfilm 1368303.
* If the records for the church you want are not at  the Family History Library or among
the holdings of  the National Archives of Scotland, see if the records are still in local custody.

SCT Maps

http://www.multimap.com/home.html  lets you search on a city, village, or
parish name   allows you to zoom in and out.  I found that looking at a
200,000 scale view helped me orient and then I would go closer.  I found
that 25,000 gave good detail but in some areas going to 10,000 or lower you
really didn't gain much

 http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/scotland.imagemap?393,195  another
clickable map but I think the first one had better detail...but try them
both and make your own decision

would be. Wish you could scroll once on it.

The Gazetteer for Scotland is a vast geographical database, featuring details of towns,
villages, bens and glens from the Scottish Borders to the Northern Isles. The first
comprehensive gazetteer produced for Scotland since 1885, it includes tourist attractions,
industries and historic sites, together with histories of family names and biographies of
famous people associated with Scotland. The network of connections between all of these
entries make this gazetteer unique.
The Gazetteer is already the largest Scottish resource available on the web, yet is growing
constantly. It contains thousands of entries for all parts of the country and some 150 entries
were added or updated in the last week alone. Please look at 'Gazetteer Statistics' for
detailed information.

Another website based around a locality that provides a wealth of information for

Scotland, provides a huge wealth of information on families in the area.
The site contain data from the 1881 Census, Parish register information for Deaths
and Births, census strays, maps, information on local surnames, as well as
miscellaneous information about the area and maps. The site could do with a
little potted history of the parish, and I was not fond of the design, with the
split screen. Apart from this I found the website to
be interesting and useful

Here's the tip. Go to the site www.scottishdocuments.com
click the button for advanced search and find the box for other details/place. Here you can
put in anything you like. I put in Tasmania, Hobart, Diemen’s. You might have a particular
interest in musicians or solicitors. I have some ancestors who hail from the small town of
New Deer & Peterhead in Aberdeenshire. By searching I can get quite a good snapshot of
some of the folk in the town in the 18th & 19th century.  Many Scots migrated to England,
Australia, America, NZ, etc. but still left wills in Scotland. Conversely,
many English folk, and even some colonials, lived or worked in Scotland and
left wills there.
