Maiden related news and info...

2006 - A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH

OK lets get straight to business - A Matter Of Life And Death is the best album since Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.   Maiden are even playing the whole album start to finish on the current tour, with a few usual classics at the end of the set - Fear Of The Dark, Iron Maiden, 2 Minutes To Midnight, The Evil That Men Do, Hallowed Be Thy Name.  So for what must be the first time ever, they aren't playing any tracks like Sanctuary, Wrathchild, The Number Of The Beast, Run To The Hills, and The Trooper.  That speaks for how much they believe in the new material and how good the fan reaction has been.

The great thing about this album is it's consistantly good - unlike Dance Of Death which had a few fantastic tracks, this album is consistantly good/great/awesome start to finish.  There's not a track I dislike - the ones I like least are still good.  There's little variations and interesting bits and hooks throughout the album that keep me interested, without sounding like anyone else but Maiden.  Things that have dragged down Maiden since Seventh Son, like simple repetitive choruses, long slow intros, not being heavy enough, etc, just don't seem to be a problem with this album (the intros are there as usual but I like all of it).

It's been hard to try and rate the tracks against each other, let alone pick a favourite.  Here's a current attempt with my favourite first:
The Legacy, Lord Of Light, Brighter Than A Thousand Suns, The Longest Day, For The Greater Good Of God, The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg, The Pilgrim, Out Of The Shadows, Different World, These Colours Don't Run.  That last track is one of the fan favourites for many and will be a good one in concert, so that shows you how good the album is.

TWO NEW ZEALAND IRON MAIDEN TRIBUTE BANDS

I've had contact from a Maiden tribute band based in Hamilton known as both Pantheon (when doing original music I think) and simply New Zealand Iron Maiden Tribute.  They gig around the top half of the North Island a bit but are yet to make it further south.

Here's their current setlist and it's a beauty, not to mention a good long 2 hours of music:
1. Aces high 2. 2 minutes 2 midnight 3. Flight of icarus 4. Powerslave 5. Charlotte the harlot -Break-
6. Number of the beast 7. The evil that men do 8. Phantom of the opera 9. Hallowed be thy name 10. Fear of the dark -Break-
11. The trooper 12. Run to the hills 13. Purgatory 14. Infinite dreams 15. Be quick or be dead -Break-
16. Revelations 17. The clairvoyant 18. The prisoner 19. Wasted years 20. Stranger in a strange land -plus 1 encore if called for-

If you'd like to contact them, try jasonius@paradise.net.nz or 'Chris Harris' on 021-582-432.

There is also a Wellington based tribute known as Made Of Iron.   They have been gigging a bit recently.  When they do a full two hour headlining set, it goes something like this:
The Trooper - Invaders - Be Quick or Be Dead - The Wickerman - Wasted Years - Running Free - Phantom of the Opera - Revelations - Flight of Icarus - Ides of March/Wrathchild - Sanctuary - The Evil That Men Do - Flash of the Blade - Fear of the Dark - Aces High - The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden - Blood Brothers - Hallowed be thy Name - Run to the Hills  (I've also seen them go Killers and Out Of The Silent Planet!)

Update September 2005: I've had word of another one, based in Auckland, called Coffin With Spikes.

LIVE DVD AND DOUBLE CD FROM THE DANCE OF DEATH TOUR

Not much has happened in recent times except the release of the most excellent History Part 1: Early Days double DVD.  If you don't have that, buy it!  Lots of great & interesting new interview/documentary footage, not to mention fantastic live footage including unreleased and rare old stuff.

Anyway, the forthcoming live releases are from the Dance Of Death tour and called Death On The Road.  Not surprisingly the tracklist isn't terribly inventive, although as well as a lot of Dance Of Death material it does have a couple of songs returning to the setlist, Can I Play With Madness? and Lord Of The Flies.

The full tracklist is: Wildest Dreams, Wrathchild, Can I Play With Madness?, The Trooper, Dance Of Death, Rainmaker, Brave New World, Paschendale, Lord Of The Flies, No More Lies, Hallowed Be They Name, Fear Of The Dark, Iron Maiden, Journeyman, The Number Of The Beast, Run To The Hills.

I haven't got it just yet but from what I hear it's good but by many accounts Bruce had an off night that night compared to many of the other shows on the tour.
Update:  Now that I've got it I'm a bit disappointed really.  It just seems to be lacking an X-factor (if you'll excuse the pun).   Songs like Dance Of Death and Paschendale just don't seem quite special enough, and it doesn't help that I am not a fan of No More Lies and Journeyman, or Lord Of The Flies for that matter.

There were also single formats released for The Trooper (live 2003 and studio versions) including a different live B-side on each format from the Early Days tour - Prowler (CD), Another Life (7"), and Murders In The Rue Morgue (12" pic disc).

AGAIN NO TOUR DOWNUNDER

Again Iron Maiden ignore Australian and New Zealand fans!  Not that I think Maiden will ever play New Zealand again, but to not make it to Australian AGAIN really did suck.  They gave preference to their Japan tour and playing the gigs and festivals there, and contended that they couldn't schedule anything for Australia.   That caused the fansite maidencentral.com to shut down in disgust that Maiden had shat on their fans down under yet again.

PASCHENDALE EXHIBIT AT NEW ZEALAND ARMY MUSEUM IN WAIOURU

When driving past Waiouru in January 2004 I noticed a huge banner on the side of the Army Museum for an exhibition they had on for "Paschendale - A Descent Into Hell".  Had no time and no camera at the time, and the exhibit ended in February.  But in March I was going by and at least the banner was still there - albeit rather faded after being out in the elements for so long!  This time I had a camera on hand, so for the record...

"DANCE OF DEATH", "WILDEST DREAMS", AND "RAINMAKER"

The latest album Dance Of Death was released in New Zealand on 29th September, well behind the rest of the world!
Running time is around 68 minutes, and it's got the stupid copy control on it. Tracklist: Wildest Dreams, Rainmaker, No More Lies, Montsegur, Dance Of Death, Gates Of Tomorrow, New Frontier, Paschendale, Face In The Sand, Age Of Innocence, Journeyman.  There is also a double LP picture disc version.

The first single Wildest Dreams was not initially released in NZ, no surprise there.  The standard overseas CD single had Wildest Dreams, Pass The Jam (a "jam" track that ultimately is fairly placid and not all that interesting), and the Orchestral mix of Blood Brothers.  The DVD single has the Wildest Dreams video, and two DVD audio tracks - Rock Mixes of Nomad and Blood Brothers.  There is a Japanese version of the single which contains the three normal CDsingle tracks plus the Blood Brothers Rock Mix.  A local release finally surfaced containing just Wildest Dreams and Pass The Jam.

The second single Rainmaker was also released internationally with audio and DVD versions, the former having and Orchestral mix of Dance Of Dance and another "jam" track More Tea Vicar as bonus tracks, and the latter having the Rainmaker video and live versions of The Wicker Man and Children Of The Damned as DVD audio tracks.  The Japanese version is quite cool as it has the audio tracks from the DVD version as well as computer-encoded videos for Wildest Dreams and Rainmaker.  I'm pretty sure I've seen Rainmaker released locally with just More Tea Vicar as a bonus track.

The Windows Media and RealMedia versions of the Wildest Dreams video are available from the MaidenNewZealand file area on the YahooGroups site.

MY THOUGHTS ON DANCE OF DEATH AFTER ONE WEEK

Bruces vocals sound very 'live' and not polished up or overly double-tracked. I like to give some credit for that (which is also something to be said for Blaze's songs in Maiden) and figure that the live renditions should be quite close to the album sound vocally. Whereas I thought some of the Brave New World material lost a little bit vocally when being done live, e.g. The Wicker Man.

This album feels a bit heavier overall than probably most albums since Powerslave. There are a number of real Maiden-sounding bits on this record (which seems a stupid thing to say) which is good, even a short riff in Paschendale that sounds like very early Maiden, but there are also bits that sound a bit too recycled from recent albums.

Overall they didn't quite nail it with this album in my opinion. On a poll on the official Maiden Bulletin Board, there is a distinct gap between the top 5 favourite tracks and the rest of them, and I more or less agree.  I currently rate this album below Brave New World and think I always will, despite a couple of definite highlights. Unfortunately the highlights tend to show up the average tracks rather badly.

I rate the songs in this order...

1.   Paschendale - Heavy, interesting, probably best song since Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.
2.   Dance of Death - Love it.  Simple as that.  The album is worth buying just for these top 2 tracks.
3.  Montsegur - Good, heavyish, perhaps too many words too quickly at times.
4.  Rainmaker - Good song but a bit sad that there aren't many better on the album.  Presumably it will be the second single.
5.  New Frontier - The catchy chorus helps.  This is Nicko's first (co)writing credit!
6.  Face In The Sand - No specific comments come to mind right now...
7.  Age Of Innocence - Some idiot on alt.rock-n-roll.metal.ironmaiden said this sounded like hair metal?
8.  Wildest Dreams - Probably a bit sad that a very average track rates this high! OK for a single I suppose but nothing special.  The Wicker Man is better.
9.   Journeyman - Thought I might like this more when I heard it was a semi-acoustic type track, but I'm disappointed really.
10.  No More Lies - Other than a couple of nice touches, it's fairly boring and sounds a bit too Blaze-era musically.
11.  Gates Of Tomorrow - Thought it was OK at first but rapidly fell down the rankings!

Overall I'd give it 7.5 out of 10.

INTERESTING FILES IN THE MAIDENNEWZEALAND AREA ON YAHOOGROUPS

Those who are members of the MaidenNZ email list are able to access the various files that are stored in the files section of the MaidenNewZealand web page @ YahooGroups (assuming of course that you have a Yahoo ID and are logged into YahooGroups).
Here are some examples of the available files at the I write this: A tracks of Dio in concert with a guest appearances by Bruce; an off-the-wall interview with Steve Harris; TV advert for Edward The Great, the rare "Wrathchild 1999 new vocal version"; the Iron Maiden FAQ; studio and bootleg live versions of the new single, and a rare live bootleg version of Murders In The Rue Morgue with Blaze on vocals.

MAIDEN SPECIAL RADIO SHOW ON RADIO ACTIVE, 9TH DECEMBER 2002

Hope you were able to listen in to this collection of covers, live tracks, and rare tracks!  The playlist for the night was...

EDDIES ARCHIVE AND EDWARD THE GREAT COMPILATION

Eddies Archive is a 3 double CD set including a fair chunk of rare and unreleased live tracks (e.g. early live stuff with Di`anno and a complete show from the Beast On The Road tour) plus b-side tracks, with a couple of collectible extras all in a cool metal cask. You could get it in NZ from www.realgroovy.co.nz for about $200 which isn't a bad price after comparing internationally.  The initial relase was limited but there is now a 2nd edition.

Edward The Great is a single CD greatest hits collection (double vinyl picture disc for the collectors too).  It's about 16 tracks, kicking off with Run To The Hills and The Number Of The Beast, and ending up with The Wicker Man and Fear Of The Dark live at Rio.  It has a couple of notable omissions I think, namely Aces High and Be Quick Or Be Dead, but I guess not everything can be on one disc.  It does have all the other 'hit' singles including all 4 from the SSOASS era and their only number 1 single, Bring Your Daughter...

RUN TO THE HILLS SINGLES / ROCK IN RIO LIVE ALBUM INFO

A re-release of sorts for Run To The Hills occured on 11th March 2002 (UK release dates), and on 25th March was the Rock In Rio live album on double CD and limited edition triple picture LP formats. A DVD release followed later and thankfully the double DVD version is available as PAL region 4 format.

Rock In Rio was recorded January 2001 and was the standard Brave New World tour setlist, with the addition of Run To The Hills. Full tracklisting for all versions:

NUMBER OF THE BEAST DVD RELEASE

A DVD version of The Number Of The Beast has been released, "packed with exclusive interviews with the entire band and featuring masses of previously unseen footage from the 1982 Hammersmith Odeon Show", plus bonus advance footage of Hallowed Be Thy Name live from the (at that time "forthcoming") Rock In Rio release. This DVD is part of a "classic albums" series also including Judas Priest's British Steel and Metallica's Black Album. It has been available overseas for quite a while but not in Australasia until at least March 2002.

MISCELLANEOUS MAIDEN RELATED STUFF TO HELP PASS THE TIME

The awesome American metal band Iced Earth recently released a box set called Dark Genesis. It's long been known that Jon Schaffer, the founder and driving force behind Iced Earth, is a big fan of Maiden's classic material and Steve Harris. Dark Genesis includes a covers CD including remakes of The Number of The Beast and Hallowed Be Thy Name. There is also a writeup by John about the covers album and his influences, including Maiden of course. Click here to see a scan of the article.

Click here for an awesome bitmap based on the Fear Of The Dark artwork (640x480, 256kb) file you can use as wallpaper. I got this from the alt.rock-n-roll.metal.ironmaiden newsgroup years ago and have no idea who did it, but I think it's fantastic.

More images you can download! Here are eight pictures from a Nicko McBrain drum clinic at The Tivoli in Helsingborg, Sweden, on 7th November 2001. Thanks to Niklas Nilsson <minstrel@popstar.com> for these pics!

Lastly, an Iron Maiden tribute band with a difference. That's because The Iron Maidens are an all girl band!

BRUCE DICKINSON "BEST OF" ALBUM RELEASED SEPTEMBER 2001

Check out www.screamforme.com for the full info. In short, initial copies only, will be a double disc set, with Disc 2 containing many interesting rarities & unreleased tracks. After the 2CD version sells out, it will revert to the single disc version which will be exactly the same as Disc 1 from the 2CD version. Disc 1 contains album tracks from each of his 5 "solo" albums (only one track from the criminally underrated Skunkworks), a live track, and two new tracks. All the tracks are digitally remastered.

SCANS OF THE IRON MAIDEN'S 1998 RIP IT UP INTERVIEW

As mentioned just below, there was an interview with Iron Maiden appearing in RIU during the Seventh Son era.
Thanks again to Chris Rigby who has scanned the two parts of the interview for us. Click on page 1 then page 2 to view it.

IRON MAIDEN'S NEW ZEALAND CONNECTIONS

Maiden had at least one kiwi on their crew for many years. This is what Nicko said in an interview by Geoff Dunn that appeared in the May 1988 issue of Rip It Up:
"We've got a chap here who personally takes care of Steve and he's from Wellington. We call him Rangi but his name's Mark Williamson and 'ee's a diamond geezer. He's been with the band for three years and he's always telling us about New Zealand. Just from the stories he tells us we're all keyed up to to come and see you all. We should be down that way November time."

Note they never made it here on that tour either. You can click here for a cover scan (jpg 311kb 1149x1632) from that issue of Rip It Up. I've heard from two sources that our Rangi hails from Stokes Valley (which is indeed in the Wellington area). His name appears in one form or another in the credits for all the albums from Piece Of Mind to Fear Of The Dark inclusive. On the LAD, SIT, SS, and NPFTD albums his name appears quite early in the credits, which is a sure sign of a key crew member. There may have been more than one kiwi involved too. In the POM credits it says "Barry Drinkwater and the kiwis - Clutch, Rangy (sic), and Jeff". Those names also appeared all together on the Powerslave credits, with Rangi spelt correctly that time.
[Many thanks to Chris Rigby for the Rip It Up interview information and cover scan]

And there is a family connection as well. This is from a 1999 interview with Steve Harris during their tour of Canada...
Interviewer: Have you had much time to look around here in Saint John?
Steve Harris: I've had a couple of days here but haven't had a chance to get out too much, its been raining most of the time. It's a lot like being home (laughs) It seems to be nice. Part of the port reminds me of Auckland in New Zealand. I got family that live there and I really like it, really nice, the people are so friendly.

MARILLION & IRON MAIDEN MEMBERS PERFORMING TOGETHER ON STAGE IN 1987

An old bit of news/trivia that I didn't learn until recently. In November 1987, Marillion were playing at Wembley Arena  and during their encores they were interrupted by a number of people, including Nicko, Bruce and Janick.
Firstly, Nicko, Janick, and Jimmy Bain (Dio) entered the stage and launched into The Boys Are Back In Town. Then Bruce joined them all for All The Young Dudes, reading the lyrics from cuecards as he sung them. The gig ended with Gimme Some Lovin' followed by a version of A Little Help From My Friends featuring both Bruce and Fish (ex-Marillion singer).
Of course Bruce went on to record a version of All The Young Dudes and released it on his album Tattooed Millionaire.

BOGUS RUMOURS OF IRON MAIDEN RELEASES

There were two bogus rumours relating to Iron Maiden EP releases in late 2000/early 2001. The first was an apparent Japanese only release for a Blood Brothers EP. A few months after that, there was talk of a free fan club EP containing as yet unreleased material (live tracks+covers) being sent to North American fan club members. That was bogus too.
Of course back before the release of any title & track details for Brave New World, there was a famous rumour concocted by two european Maiden fans, that the album would be called Majesty Of Gaia, and they made up a whole tracklisting for it. They sent that to various places and it ended up being reported as fact on various metal sites!

METAL RADIO SHOW ON WELLINGTON'S RADIO ACTIVE 89FM

Every Monday night 11pm-1am on Active 89FM is the Anger Management show. If you are outside of Wellington, there are realaudio feeds from the Radio Active web site. All types of metal/dark/industrial/extreme material can be heard. I am one of four DJ's rostered for the show, and my show is usually the second Monday of each month.
Each DJ plays their own mix of music so each show can be quite different. My shows always include Iron Maiden or Maiden related content, unless the show happens to be a particular theme/special/tribute show that Maiden doesn't fit into.

In November 2000 I did a Bruce Dickinson special, December 2001 was a Priest show, and December 2002 was finally be a Maiden special!

IRON MAIDEN COVERS RELEASED BY NEW ZEALAND BANDS - MP3'S AVAILABLE HERE!

Here are two MP3 files of not-neccessarily-serious covers of two classic Maiden tracks, by New Zealand bands:
Wrathchild by Head Like A Hole (.zip, 3223 kb). It's the full song, but not quite as we know it! Was included as a bonus track on their "A Crying Shame" CD single, which also included cover versions of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire", and "Summer Nights" from Grease movie. More recently it's been released on their "Blood On The Honky Tonk Floor" compilation.
Running Free by The SML (.zip, 1198kb). This is only a minute and a half long, it's obviously just the guys mucking around, and they decided to put it on the end of their "Mixdown" CD Single.

METAL NEW ZEALAND MAILING LIST

As an extension of the MaidenNewZealand concept, MetalNewZealand is a new list that has been created for discussion and information about any type of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal/Dark/Doom/Extreme, and is open to people in New Zealand and Kiwi's abroad. To subscribe, send a blank email to MetalNewZealand-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or click this link for the MetalNewZealand web page at YahooGroups.

NO BRAVE NEW WORLD DOWN UNDER TOUR!

To sum up, after many months of positive signs & comments from Iron Maiden about touring New Zealand and Australia, and reasons for delaying the tour, (clashing with olympics, extending north american tour, etc), they very quietly just didn't come down under at all, not even just to Aussie. The only semi-official comment I ever saw about this was on an interview with one of the band members where a question was asked about this situation. All that was offered was a comment about the sales apparently not doing so well down this part of the world, and a band will only go 'where they are wanted'.

I know there were shitloads of NZ'ers and Aussies looking forward to the tour. And it's the chicken and the egg a bit isn't it - You would have thought they'd play a few dates down under to help raise their profile and sell more records. I'm sure it would have been more than sucessful since they could have trumpeted the return of Adrian and Bruce in their promotion etc. A lot of people, especially in Australia, were just plain gutted that Maiden came up with a no-show. Personally speaking I was angry!

MEET YOUR MAIDEN NEW ZEALAND LIST OWNER

I am Glenn, a huge Maiden fan and the creator of the MaidenNewZealand list. I have a web page called "Heavy Metal Music In My Blood" which features Iron Maiden among others. It includes my recommendations for top Iron Maiden & Bruce Dickinson albums, information on each of the major Iron Maiden tribute CD's which have been appearing the last few years, and information about the rare Video+CD release of Maiden England. Of course there are also links to the official Iron Maiden and Bruce Dickinson sites, as well as a Maiden fan site put together by a friend of mine in Holland.

MY REVIEW OF IRON MAIDEN'S MILLENIUM ALBUM, BRAVE NEW WORLD

This review has been written as a discussion under a number of headings including specific comments on each song...

Repetitiveness
For the post-SSOASS albums including BNW, many including myself have claims that there is too much repetition, mainly in the chorus lyrics, and also with too many slow/quiet intros leading into the songs.

However I have to say that there is no repetition in BNW that bothers me. Sure there are a few choruses that just repeat the same words, and there are a few songs with slow/quiet intros, but on this album it doesn't bother me at all.

I think it's a case of the balance of an album, and also how 'good' the fans think it is overall. Most of Maiden's albums have had songs with pretty basic and/or repetitive choruses, but it's only when there are too many of them, and/or when the album itself doesn't capture the listener's interest enough, that the repetition starts to nag. At least that's how I find it.

Consistancy
This album has something that NPFTD and FOTD didn't in terms of consistant quality of the songs. Those albums both have a few great tracks, but also ones of a low enough quality to drag the album as a whole down.

The X Factor and Virtual XI on the other hand were more consistant albums I felt, which was one of their strengths, although offset by other factors such as Bruce not being on vocals, the guitar sound often sounding too thin, etc.

But on BNW I quite enjoy even the songs I rate lowest, there isn't a single song that drags the album down, and this results in a feeling that BNW as a whole is "greater than the sum of it's parts".

Flaws
Well there aren't too many I think. There are a couple of things that bother me, that seem to be to be flaws. I mention these below as well, but for example I hear a popping or tapping sound in the early stages of Dream Of Mirrors, some odd sounding notes in the beginnings of The Nomad, and there was something I noticed on another track too, might have been the title track, I can't remember now.

I find those things to be annoying, but everything else about the album to be great, so at the end of the day I'm not too unhappy. But without these little things, I would rate the album as a whole even higher, perhaps truely right up there with the 80's classics.

Sound
One of the problems of FOTD, TXF, and VXI was the guitars that sounded too light, or too much like only one guitar was being used, or both. This time I'm enjoying the guitar sound a lot more, there is heavyness present when there needs to be, and a bit more crunch in general.

I also think their 'live' approach in recording BNW was a good decision. If nothing else, it just sounds different than their last few albums, which was probably necessary otherwise people would be saying "it sounds like [insert recent album name here]" even if the songs were better. Anyway, however it happened, I think the sound of this album works very well.

General
This album has a much greater feeling of conviction than the 90's efforts. The band sound like they are going for it, the heavy bits are nice and heavy, the melodic bits are great, Bruce is going hard out, and Nicko has proved his disbelievers wrong. I also think that on the whole the lyrics on this album are quite strong and better overall than the recent albums.

I also feel this album has more balance than TXF and VXI in terms of the mix of slower/faster tracks to the longer/epic tracks. Both Blaze albums really only had the one short & fast type track, which upset the balance too much. On BNW we have 3 out of 10, which seems a lot better.

Now onto the songs....

The Wicker Man 7.5/10
Not a lot to say here, generally regarded as one of the weaker tracks and I agree. It's interesting no-one seems to have commented on the "Piper at the gates of dawn" lyric. Speaking of the lyrics, they are pretty strange all 'round on this song, I've got no idea what it's on about!

Ghost Of The Navigator 9.5/10
One of my top 3, it's got a great epic feel, the music feels as if it's building up the whole time, yet the song finishes in under 7 minutes and it doesn't feel as if it's ended too soon. It's also nice and heavy! Well done lads, and a good choice for one of the concert songs.

Brave New World 9/10
I love the intro, and the track itself is great. It's the sort of song that is very 'solid' and without being flashy, fast, or particularly varied, manages to still be one of my favourites. My two favourite tracks from TXF (Look... & Aftermath) fall into the same sort of category. Anyway, BNW is a good choice for title track.

Blood Brothers 8/10
At first I didn't think much of the 'orchestration', but fortunately it's not too overpowering and it's easy for it to just blend in with the song, and it does enhance it nicely. However if I listen closely to it, it sounds a little bit amateurish, for lack of a better word. Still, a good song (they all are), although I would have prefered others be in the live set list.

The Mercenary 7/10
My least favourite. I can't find anything particularly interesting or outstanding about it, although I think it's still good to have a track like this in terms of the overall balance of the songs as I mentioned earlier. I also think this should make way for The Fallen Angel in the set list.

Dream Of Mirrors 9.5/10
Also one of my top favourites, and definitely my g/f's favourite. A great track which holds my interest the whole way though it's changes in tempo and intensity. As I mentioned before, there seems to be a popping or tapping sound during the "don't know why I feel this way..." verse, which I don't understand. But other than that, great stuff, and another great choice for the concerts.

The Fallen Angel 8.5/10
Ahh yes, my favourite of the 3 shorter tracks. It's the track on this album that most reminds me of stuff from albums like TNOTB, POM, and Powerslave. That's because it's got this driving, powerful sound and feeling to it, such as much of that classic early-to-mid 80's Maiden had. Should be a permanent fixture in the set list!

The Nomad 8/10
Nice middle eastern touches in the sound of this one, but wisely not overdone. The warbling middle eastern way Bruce sings the word 'Nomad' in the first chorus is also a nice authentic touch. The lyrics are perhaps a bit cliche in a way, but they aren't that bad. Right at the start of the song when the guitars are playing it sounds like one of them is a bit out of time or key or something with the others, which detracts from it a bit. I have to admit that I suspect it's Janick. Sometimes I notice it more than other times.

Out Of The Silent Planet 8/10
Not too much to say about this one other than it's a very enjoyable song. The way Bruce sings this song is very powerful, and particularly the "You are guilty" and "I accuse you..." that really does make it sound like he's about to jump out of the CD player and kick everyone's butt. Could be one of the more underrated tracks.

The Thin Line Between Love And Hate 9.5/10
The fourth song on this CD that I rate as 9 or more out of 10. This song is a great ending to the album. Something different but certainly in a good way. I like the vocal style/sound in the verses and the double-tracked vocals work well for this, and of course a good old powerful chorus as only Bruce could sing. I like the the lyrics a lot too. The last 2 or 3 minutes are a nice end to the song and the album. Would love to hear this one live, but it will probably go down on a list of 'greatest Maiden songs never played live'.

So adding up all those scores, we have a total of 84.5/100. But as a complete album I'd rate it around 90/100, due to the "whole is greater than the sum of it's parts" factor that I mentioned earlier. Well done Iron Maiden!

At this stage here are some ideas that I am yet to implement for this page:
