Animal experimenters often invoke the "3Rs" of "reduce", "replace" and "refine" when discussing ways to cut down on animal experimentation. The assumption is that animal experimentation, while regettable, is necessary, and that all steps are being taken to phase it out.
Another set of 3 assumptions, which I have labelled the "three Buts",
are often used by both experimenters and the general public when excusing
vivisection. I have used this as the basis for my
talk at the ANZCCART conference in August 2003, so constructive suggestions
for improvement are welcome.
