Most New Zealanders believe that is that it is morally acceptable to use animals for food, or in necessary experiments which may alleviate human or animal suffering or preserve the environment. We also generally believe that animals in farms, laboratories, circuses and zoos should be treated humanely.
One of the purposes of this homepage is to demonstrate that animal abuse does go on in New Zealand, that animals are not treated humanely, and that most experimentation is not necessary. The public often become complacent towards animal abuse in this country, and when the subject is mentioned, people tend to respond in 3 ways.
1. It doesn't happen here
2. Animal abuses are necessary for the common good
3. Our treatment of animals is well regulated by the legal system
I have provided information from published sources and links to other pages which demonstrate that all of the above statements are false.
I also hope the links and publications provided will be a useful resource base for animal rights activists and others who wish to have sufficient factual information to argue their case.
I have concentrated on factory farming and vivisection because these are the biggest animal abuses, both in terms of animal numbers and severity of suffering. Other examples such as circuses, rodeos, zoos, pet shops, pate de foie gras etc. will be left to a later date.
My personal belief is that the general attitude of the public to animals
does not go far enough, and that all exploitative forms of human use of
animals are unacceptable, including the rearing of animals for meat, and
most dairy and poultry farming. For those who wish to explore this
issue further I will be providing links discussing the various philosophies
behind animal rights/welfare at a later date.
