A graduate of the University of Auckland and a diplomate of Massey University, John Martin has taught English to tertiary level.

He has had poems published in anthologies and magazines, not only in New Zealand, but also in Australia, the United States, Canada and England.

His work has won several prizes,including that of "The New Zealand Listener" National Poetry Day competition in 1999. He is the author of the following books of poetry:
