What is it?
UAE is a emulator. A emulator is a program that allows a computer to pretend to be another computer. UAE is a software AMIGA emulator. UAE lets you use the AMIGA operating system to run AMIGA software and games.

Meanings of AMIGA words
Kickstart, The Kickstart is part of the AMIGA operating system. It is located on 512k ROMs. The latest version is 3.1.
Workbench, Workbench is the name of the operating system itself. It is needed to run the software. The latest version is 3.9.

RAM DISK, The AMIGA operating system has the ability to use a dynamic RAM DISK. The RAM DISK can be used like any other disk but expands and contracts in size (dynamic) The RAM DISK can even be made reset proof by the use of the RAD: mounter.
GURU, When a serious error crashes the AMIGA it is called a GURU MEDITATION or SOFTWARE FAILURE. Early machines report a GURU MEDITATION. Later versions of the operating system replaced this with SOFTWARE FAILURE, but AMIGA users still use the term GURU.

What do you need
UAE. Well you would eh?
Kickstart ROM image for the version of Workbench you want to run. This is either copied from your own AMIGA or can be brought from Clanto as part of their AMIGA Forever package.
Workbench Operating System. To use AMIGA software on your emulation you will need a version of Workbench. The AMIGA Forever package has AMIGA Workbench "Hard drive images" set up and ready to run on your emulation. Your AMIGA Workbench can be copied from your hard drive to the Emulated machines drive or you can convert your Workbench floppy disks to AFD files. If you have 3.1 ROMs you can run the latest Workbench OS3.9 so buying it supports AMIGA and gives you an easy way to install the software (it comes on CD ROM and has WB3.1, 3.5 and 3.9).
A good directory tool to help set up the AMIGA side once the emulation is running.

Alternatives
AROS is a AMIGA compatible operating system based on Workbench 3.x. At the moment it runs on Intel x86 systems but is planned to be able to run native on classic AMIGA hardware.
