You will need:
Ratchet, Philips screwdriver, Breaker bar [pipe], Spanner, WD40, Grease, Methylated
Sprit and common sense.
Note: Use of methylated spirit should be
restricted to the grease areas only, avoid using over the magnet wire.
Magnet should be fine but magnet wire can be easily dissolved and please
for the love of God don't drink it.
2:
Disconnect the battery.
Initial look of the bay. You need to remove the air filter and the duct.
Open the screws etc as highlighted and also disconnect any necessary sensor connectors.
3:
View after removing the Air filter. Starter is hidden in the highlighted part.
4:
Open the bolts.
5:
The second bolt is a mother, you have to use either a breaker bar or put a pipe on the ratchet and if you don't have that either then do what I did, use the vacuum cleaner extension pipe.
6:
Here is the dirty old starter, open the highlighted bolts.
7:
Remove the solenoid first, this is the logical way to go.
8:
Well well... what do we have here.....!
9:
Yuk, no wonder poor thing couldn't start as efficiently.
10:
I'm a simple guy, I just used the commonly available Methylated Sprit to clean the dried up grease.
11:
Separate them parts and put them in a bucket, pour the meth on em and let it do its thing. Give it some time to dissolve then take the parts and using a clean cloth wipe off any excess grease.
Re-grease, don't be greedy now.
12:
Put it all together. Just reverse the whole procedure and bang on, you are done. Potentially you have just saved your self a replacement plus labour cost etc.
