A small but enthusiastic group turned up to run the tracks, scramble through the bush, find the blackberry and in one case encounter an apparently angry bee.
Getting close to daylight saving time the light was fading a bit in the bush which, combined with the fading eyesight of those of mature age, added to the challenge. And just to make sure we didn’t just head in the general direction and hope to see the bright orange flags – there weren’t any! We were required to distinguish the control stands from the myriad of branches etc without the usual bright beacons. Obviously not too much of a challenge for Chris and Greg who managed to get around all controls; well done! Even Tony’s old legs almost got him round. Great to see some new faces and also some ‘old’ faces reappear (Charles). Also great to see Peter and Carol make the epic journey from Wanganui. They took up Graham’s kind invitation to remain for the BBQ and enjoyed their romantic gourmet twilight dinner of steak and salad (as opposed to the alternative of sausages and buns). I’m not sure that David had time to eat. He was last seen still trying to work out if he really had beaten Dad. Well David, just as well your orienteering is better than your maths; the independent audit found you actually scored higher than you thought. But for the record, it wasn’t a maths error, just allocating the wrong points to the clip box.
A great evening and nice to have a change from the street events.
Thanks Graham.

Next week sees another slight change in that the format will be a point-to-point event where everyone has to follow a set course. There are individual start times from 6.00pm to 6.30pm with Course closure at 7.30pm
There will be 3 courses to choose from, a yellow course for beginners, orange short for more of a challenge and orange long for those wanting the extra distance.
If you think you will be slower, come closer to the 6.00pm time if possible and for those who always run late (Chris and Greg), we’ll hold open the 6.30pm slots for you!
The event is at Tuapaka which is a Massey farm, found on the road between Aokautere and Ashhurst (SH57), closer to the Ashhurst end. You can check it on the map found on www.maptalk.co.nz
Hope to see you all there.
