Night Orienteering Social Event - Esplanade
24 June 2010
A
small but hardy group ventured out into the Esplanade for our social
orienteering evening. This was followed by a pot-luck dinner that also served
as Dave’s birthday dinner (was he the one who chose that date?). Dave of course
didn’t run, arriving late with some lame excuse about having to ref hockey.
Royce wasn’t going to run because she’d already been out tramping for the day
and was even more convinced about that decision when it started to rain.
However, a strategic delay in the start time by 5mins and a respite from the
rain saw her change her mind and she joined the Super Veteran group of Pat,
George and Megan. Perhaps she was concerned that they may need her SAR skills. They
may have had safety in numbers but when it came to adding up the score it took
another 45mins to get a consensus. Greg hid his fear of the dark well by taking
his daughter with him to ward off any evil spirits. Russell ventured out on his own but forgot to check his watch when he left, so he
was back in 35mins. Kyle’s only mistake of the evening was taking note of Joy’s
claim that the Course couldn’t be done in 45mins at night. Because of that he
strategically missed out a control early in the Course. It was the only Control
he missed and then finished with 3 mins to spare. The
one control he missed just happened to be the one with the Moro and Snickers
Bars! Not a problem though, because everyone chose to miss that Control; plenty
left for everyone. Mental note for next time – make the Control with the Snickers
worth the most points. Chris, the most hardy of us
all, biked in to the Esplanade in the rain, completed the Course, collected
some controls then biked home again – I hope all those who stayed home and warm
in front of their cosy fire feel humbled.
