Stud History

Stud Name:

Stroma was the name of  Philip's parents farm at Waiau, North Canterbury New Zealand for over 30 years, so it was decided to carry the name on with our Texel Stud.
 

Stud Beginnings:

Stroma Texels was founded in February 1991 on three ewe hoggets from Sheepac NZ, one of the groups that imported the stock into the country. Following this initial purchase we have been very fortunate that we have purchased a number of very good ewes that have added a larger genetic base to our flock. We have used Artificial Insemination since 1991 over the whole flock to make use of the best rams available and our flock has been performance recorded on the Studfax Plus pedigree recording program since 1992.

In 1997 we purchased, in a syndicate with four other breeders, the superior sire Texel Plus A28/95, bred by the famous Texel Plus Stud, at the National Texel Ram Sale for the top price. We were also fortunate to pick up a number of their top ewes at their dispersal sale that have complimented our own flock. In 1999 we joined the NZ Texel Sire Referencing Program in their search for top sires within the breed. We also have joined the SIL recording program as part of the Sire Referencing Program.
