The Southland Regional Final for this year's pepsismokefreerockquest was held in front of a large crowd at the James Hargest Hall. Judges for the evening were Nelson musician/music teacher and Rockquest Trust Trustee Peter Rainey and Christchurch musician and music teacher Glenn Common . According to Common, "the night was full of energy and enthusiasm with lots of commitment from all the groups. A strong performance with great vocals made No Post Mortem obvious winners."

The three groups placed at the Regional Final now go into the National Final selection and will be required to record a demo song at The Southland Polytechnic Recording Studio and organise, promote and perform a short tour of schools before reporting back to pepsismokefreerockquest'99 organisers, within six weeks.
