Lake Waikaremoana page 1

Lake Waikaremoana is on the east side of the North Island, on the edge of the Urewera National Park. Which is a huge area of rugged country still covered with the original native forests. There is a camp in the sheltered bay above that can be reached by road. And huts around the lake that can only be reached by hiking or by boat.


The Panekiri Bluffs dominate the scene, and the lake was formed thousands of years ago by a huge landslide from these tilted and lifted plates. The outlet of the lake is in the distance in the left area of the picture below.

I visited Waikaremoana several times years ago, these pictures are from when I revisited in August 2005. Of course I did some fishing, found it quite slow. Most of the fish were probably in the breeding streams at that time of year, I even saw them in the streams when hiking. But I caught a few trolling on the lake, and they tasted excellent.
