Vietnam is a vibrant country with a turbulent history. Of course, in recent times there was the American War (the Vietnamese term for what the West call the Vietnam War). Prior to that there were conflicts with the French and going back in time many border conflicts.
The Vietnamese have shown an amazing resilience to survive past conquests and resource sapping wars to repel insurgents. It has only been in the last few years, with the lifting of sanctions, that Vietnam has had a chance to recover from the most recent conflict to once again become a free and independent country.
For the tourist Vietnam has a lot to offer - marvellous beaches, colourful scenery, fabulous food and most of all friendly and hospitable people.
