HONORARY DOCTORATE FOR TESSA DUDER

It’s not often Tessa Duder is lost for words, but the author, editor and playwright admits to being "gobsmacked" when she got word she was being awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Waikato.

Tessa Duder was Waikato University’s first writer in residence, appointed in 1991. During that year, based in the university’s English Department, she completed books three and four in her Alex Quartet; books that have become New Zealand children’s classics.

Tessa says, "That year was a watershed year for me. I was wonderfully welcomed, and without a university background I found it stimulating having access to university life, the library and the general ambience of the place. I not only wrote every day but also appeared on stage in the university production of Twelfth Night. I relished that experience too because I hadn’t been on stage for about 30 years."

Kiwi Write4Kidz

This very active group is ideal for both established writers and those interested in getting children's books published. During 2007 they organised several seminars focusing on different areas of writing such as historical novels and picture books.

In 2008 they will be focusing on helping published writers promote their books, particularly to schools. Their website at www.kiwiwrite4kidz.co.nz now includes information about local children's writers and their books. Schools who do not belong to the New Zealand Book Council's Writers in Schools scheme can organize an author's visit through Kiwi Write4Kidz.

As a member of both Kiwi Write4Kidz and Writers in Schools, I am keen to visit schools in the Rodney and Auckland areas. My eight books cover themes such as bullying, dealing with death and loss (primary level books); the effects of World War II on New Zealand, early European settlement in New Zealand (intermediate level books); conservation, Maori land issues, parental divorce, and child sexual abuse (secondary level books).

Te Tai Tamariki

The home of children’s literature, Aotearoa New Zealand

Te Tai Tamariki is a proposed national centre to be based in Canterbury which will be administered by a Trust. The vision of Te Tai Tamariki is to be a treasure house that celebrates the best of everything that goes into the writing and illustrating of children’s books. Taking as its models similar centres such as Dromkeen (Australia) and the Centre for the Children’s Book (Newcastle) Te Tai Tamariki will focus primarily on illustrative works of children’s literature including, for the first time, educational publishing.

Te Tai Tamariki will collect and preserve such works from Aotearoa New Zealand as well as providing dynamic exhibitions throughout the country. It will support and inform a comprehensive education programme for all ages with a special focus on the visual literacy learning outcomes of the school curriculum. The collection will also include historical and contemporary works, including pre-publication artists’ roughs and reference material.

To find out more, visit their website at www.tetaitamariki.org.nz/

Te Tai Tamariki means ‘The children’s tide.’ The name relates to the tide of children: their lives, their stories, their strength, their spirit. The tide is a constant event but forever changing.
