Content of Author Lists:These pages offer a personal selection of contemporary writers for children and teenagers, who (in my opinion) are currently producing good quality novels. The lists are arranged by country: New Zealand, Australia, USA & Canada, and United Kingdom & Ireland. The New Zealand list is generous, in order to be useful to overseas visitors. A later addition is the New Zealand Picturebook Authors List.
Significant Titles:
Added to the authors' names
are a few significant book titles, marked J (for Junior,
approximate reading age of 8 to 10 years old), I (for
Intermediate, approximate reading age of 10 to 13) or T (for
Teenage, approximate reading age of 13 upwards). These indications
are supplied as a general guide only. Parents and professionals should
apply their own judgement before recommending a title or an author to a
particular child.
Emphasis on Quality:
These pages do not provide
comprehensive lists of classic children's writers. Nor do they include
names of well-known authors who write popular fiction, particularly series
novels (eg. Paul Jennings, R.L. Stine, Lucy Daniels). Well-known and
popular writers already receive extensive publicity from their publishers.
This site is intended to promote good quality children's novels which may
not be getting the publicity they deserve.
These lists will be updated on an ongoing basis, and suggestions are welcome. Where possible I've linked an author's name to a relevant website. I'd appreciate being emailed about any author's website I've missed.
