NZ Sourced Dish
A
recent withdrawal from the satellite TV scene has left a significant number of
off-set dishes surplus on the NZ market. Available are 640 mm, 840 mm and
1-metre dishes. These are set up for satellite TV work with a holder for the
standard masthead unit and adjustable clamp.
Gain figures are not immediately available however the 640 mm unit is the same size as another unit with a claimed linear polarized gain of 24 dBi.
The 640 mm and 840 mm dishes are relatively inexpensive at around $55 and $85 respectively however the 1 metre dish is closer to $300.
With
the large number available someone may be able to source and supply these at
better prices.
The unit displayed is the TD64 or 640 mm offset unit available ex-stock from Teltrac in Christchurch. The aerials may appear on the 2.4 GHz wireless LAN systems and may find a wide market there limiting any price reductions on the surplus market.
While
final calculations have not been completed, initial estimations of the F/D are
around 0.6. For best performance it is recommended that a 4.25 turn left-hand
Helix be used for AO-40 operation.
It
is also recommended that the Helix is mounted in a suitable can (100 x 50 mm)
which enhances the gain and limits interference from side lobe reception. A
further limitation of off-set dishes is the ground noise received by the feed.
Take care in designing & mounting the feed antenna.
