“PRINCESS”
The restoration begins

The
first thing to do was find some willing and able to do the major work
as my boat building skills and time are extremely limited. Enter Peter
Murton of Murtons Timber Craft who was willing to under take the project.
Pete is pretty well known down here
in Wellington for his exellent work restoring old wooden classics.
The rot in the port side was the first to go, new inner gunwale side moulding
and skin. The old Kaurie bow sprit and fairlead was had
it, so we made one in Teak and
i fitted an auto dropping failead which will hold a 15lb Manson anchor,
It
was about now we thought that as winter was setting in it might be
a good idea to put her in the shed. Problem, how do you put a boat
this size into a small shed, easy says Pete, you take the wheels
off the trailer and I’ll take the door off the shed.

It wasn’t easy but we did it.If you
look closley you will see that not only did we use the discs for wheels,
we had to shift the axle to the top side of the spring to lower her
the last two odd inches to get her in.Now was a good time to replace
the
perspex
front windscreen , so Pete ripped it off and reframed it in mahogany. To be
glazed in 8 mil saftey glass. All finnished
looking aft.
Next strip the interior and clean up then decide on a plan
for the layout. Fridge and sink on one side, stove on the other
And redesign the helm station
The other under taking I wanted to
do was fit the windows without rubbers, Pete made up some surrounds glued to the inside of the windows
so the new windows will sit flush on the out side when fitted should
look pretty good when finished. The finished helm station and galley.Only
orig item is the sink.

What
you can’t see is an 80 ltr s.s water tank in behind the fridge. We
also managed to re use all of the original mahogany louvered Cupboard
doors, which was a blessing. Batteries, master
switches, charging control relay, and auto pilot pump are all
located under the footrest strbrd side. The pipe you can see
is inlet filler for strbd front fuel tank.

I
reckon Pete’s done a helluva job don’t you agree.
