What sort of images can I submit ?
Any sort ! Feel free to submit rendered images, scans of hand drawn plans, scans of hand drawn renderings,
Quicktime animations, wireframe models, photos of models you might have made, whatever you want. The
purpose of this site is to allow students to see what other students are doing. Have something you
think might serve this purpose ? Send it on in !
What format would you like images to be in ?
I don't really mind, as I can convert them to JPEGs myself. However if you can send in JPEGs that just
makes things a bit easier for me. Please don't send in GIFs if you can send a JPEG ( or anything else for
that matter ) as GIFs are limited to 256 colours, only 216 of which are common to both Macs and PCs. This
can lead to colourful images looking pretty awful. Line art ( which would include wireframe models )
is fine as GIFs however. If, for some reason, all you can send is a GIF then send it anyway.
The preferred size for images is around 640 pixels wide. Any wider and people with smaller monitors
may not be able to get the full effect of your masterpiece. The height of the image can be whatever suits you best.
Quicktime is the preferred format for animations, as most browsers seem to come with the Quicktime
plugin. If your CAD/rendering program cannot produce Quicktime movies, or you can't turn a set of
images into a Quicktime movie, then send me an email me and
I'll arrange something with you. Please try and keep movies to a reasonable size, say around 1 meg, but smaller would
be even better !
If you have any worries about converting images into JPEGs then when you submit the picture mention
that you would like me to do it, and I will convert it and optimise it for maximum picture quality and
minimum size. In fact if you have any doubts about image quality etc, just send the image to me and
I'll sort it out.
If enough people seem to be having problems with any of the above I may write some tutorials to ease the
way.
How do I send the image to you ?
The best ( and I guess the only ) way is to send it as an attachment to an email. If
you don't know how to do this then check the help files of your email client. I'm afraid there are too
many of them out there for me to tell you how to do it !
When you send in an image please include the following information. You don't have to include anything
you don't want to, but the more the better. Some things you should include are :
- Your name,
- Where you come from,
- Which module of the course you are doing,
- Some information about the design ( i.e. construction, intended use, interesting features etc. ),
- Some vital statistics of the design ( i.e. LWL, LOA, beam, draft, whatever you want really ),
- What you used to draw the image ( i.e. hull modelling software, CAD software, rendering software, hands ! ),
- What sort of computer you used, if any. If you want to include amount of RAM, size of hard drive,
size of monitor, processor speed etc.
- And anything else you think might be interesting.
