This means that the DCD signal from the modem is reporting no signal present,
or is not connected.
The serial cable supplied as a standard accessory with the Series 5
does not have the DCD wire connected, and therefore you must always
untick the Carrier detect (DCD) option...
Open the Modems control in the Control panel of the System
screen.
For each and every modem that you use connected via the serial cable, select
Edit.
Move to the Handshaking tab.
Remove the check from the Carrier detect (DCD) box.
You should leave the Carrier detect (DCD) box checked for the following
modems...
Psion Travel Modem
The DCD connection may, or may not work with a modem connected via the
PC
Card Adapter. You will need to experiement with your modem and connection
to see if it works. If you have DCD checked, and the modem connects OK
and you can access the web and your email, then leave it checked.
Cannot open Remote mailbox - Access denied
This does not mean that you have been denied access to your mailbox!
This message appears when the serial port is in use by another program
at the same time that you start Email and try to open your remote
mailbox.
Have a look at all of the open programs - use Ctrl-System to
show all Open files / programs - and close all those programs that
could be using the Comms port. The most likely culprit will be the Comms
program, but it could also be another third-party program that you may
have installed.
Look at the log file
If you have trouble logging on, the best place to start debugging is the
log file. You can force the Messaging Suite to generate a log file by creating
the folder C:\Logs\NetDial\, where a file called NETDIAL.TXT
will be created. Look in there - use either Word or Program and import
the file as text - and you will see what the scripts are doing.
Log files
Psion included various logging facilities with the Message Suite. If you
have any problems at all, the first place to start is with the log files...
To generate a dial-up connection log create C:\Logs\NetDial\
To generate an email log create C:\Logs\Email\
To generate an email file converter log create C:\Logs\Mailtext\
To generate a fax log create C:\Logs\Fax\
To generate a synchronisation log create C:\Logs\Synchro\
To fix the 'No dialtone' problem (for v1.1 only)
Make a backup of your psion on your pc, in the backupdirectory on your
PC \System\Data is a file called GENERIC.SCR this is a dialin-script
in ASCII format which you can edit, there you will find the command ATD
3-times as the dial-command for your modem. I changed it to ATX3D
so the modem will not wait for a dial-tone. Then copy this script manually
with PsiWin back to your S5. THIS WILL WORK. For some modems and/or phonelines
it has to be ATX0D or ATX2D. Seems a long-winded solution
to something which you can set using the software anyway...

Email crashes with reason number = 87 (for v1.1 only)
"I downloaded and installed Message Suite on my Series 5 (I have ROM 1.00(113)
on my system). The web browser is excellent and the E-mail sends mail just
fine. When I try to retreive my mail it crashes out of the E-mail program
and I get the cryptic error window that says:
PROGRAM: EMail REASON CODE: USER REASON NUMBER: 87
It completely kicks me out of E-mail. On occasion I have gotten a list
of E-mail headers for a brief moment, then it instantly dies. I have tried
it on two different Pop servers and I get the same error. I tried re-downloading
the program and re-installing it. Everything else works well. I mailed
this problem to the USA support E-mail address off the web, but haven't
heard anything back.
Has anyone seen this? Does anyone know what those error messages are?"
(from Drew Jones <drewj@capaccess.org>)
There is a known limitation in Email which causes this problem,
if your network timeout period is more than around 30 minutes. So the workaround
is to change it ('Network' control panel, "If idle, stay online for" line)
to less than 30 minutes. This should hopefully solve your problem. This
will be corrected in the next Message Suite release. Kevin Dixon <kevin-dixon@psion.com>

Using an Ericcson SH888 dualband GSM phone with a EPOC
palmtop
The Ericcson SH888 phone can communicate with an EPOC palmtop via the infrared
port (fitted as standard to both units).
To set up the Series 5, it is best to make a new modem setting for
the SH888 as follows...
IrDA bug: (4 September 1998:) There is a bug in the EPOC implementation of the IrDA protocol which
causes problems when using an EPOC device with the SH888. The bug is fixed
in Message Suite version 1.52 (6 October 1998) and higher. If you do not
have version 1.52 installed, get it now from Psions
web site.
To set up your EPOC mpalmtop for use with the SH888, make a new Modem
setting, and fill in the lines as follows:
(From Simple Technology Europe, Wed, 26 Nov 1997 20:04:01 -0800)
Simple Technology has been made aware recently of some compatibility
problems with the Compact Flash Cards in the Series 5. Simple Technology
can assure everyone that these problems have been resolved and localised
to a particular batch of products. To see if your product is affected please
check the 90000 number on the QC label on the reverse of the card. The
affected product is as follows:
90000-00573-11C (4MB Card)
90000-00573-12C (8MB Card)
90000-00573-13C (12MB Card)
90000-00573-14C (16MB Card)
90000-00573-15C (24MB Card)
90000-00573-16C (32MB Card)
Please note that all other cards are unaffected by this problem and are
100% compatible with the Psion 5. Due to some excellent feedback from comp.sys.psion.misc
user group members, Simple Technology was able to catch the problem and
limit the number of cards in circulation to approx 100 or so. Rest assured
that Simple Technology have taken every measure possible to ensure compatibility
including testing by Psion and various independent experts, such as Palmtop
Magazine etc.
Please contact your place of purchase for a replacement. Alternatively
please feel free to contact Stephen
Patton to arrange for replacement. Simple Technology prides itself
as being a customer driven company and our aim is always to please. Simple

Other CF Cards that work with a Series 5
CF (Compact Flash) cards can support ATA, IDE, or both ATA and IDE. The
Psion Series 5 requires IDE. Make sure the CF card you buy supports IDE,
or choose one from the following list:
GSM phones with built-in Modems that work with the Series
5 (and 3c, 3a, etc, etc)
These phones are reported to work well with the Series 5 Messaging Suite
and the Series 3a/3cPsiMail Internet. All of the phones have 'built in'
modems, and just need to be connected to the Psion (or the serial port
of any computer) with a simple serial cable. You'll have to make the cable
(or adaptors) yourself.

Using Templates in Word
Word uses a Word file called Normal in \System\Apps\Word\
as a template for all new files. If the template file does not exist, then
Word opens a new file with default settings or settings based on the last
file you opened in Word (this all depends on how you open a new file).
Thus you can customise Word to meet your requirements by creating a
master (empty) Word file called Normal. After you are satisfied
with the way the file looks, go to the System screen, and copy your Normal
file to \System\Apps\Word\ .
SIS File Format
Here is what I have discovered about the SIS file
format (plain text file). This is certainly enough information to get
a programmer started on writing an app to read the file, and it may help
other people to understand other Series 5 file formats.
Cheating in Bombs
When you are playing Bombs, pressing Zoom-, Zoom+, Infrared,
Cut,
Menu
(the symbols on the left of the display) in that order (bottom to top)
results in Cheat mode on being displayed.
When cheat mode is active, and you die (by revealing a bomb) you can
undo your last move by clicking on the "Time" square at the bottom of the
screen.
Using Web as a local File Browser
Try this:
Start Web
Open the page file:///C:/ to see a listing of files in disk C:.
You can navigate around the directory, and even save the displayed text
as an HTML file by using File - More - Save as... This is a great feature, and allows you to use Web as a local file
browser.
Inserting Special Characters Directly
Instead of using Shift-Ctrl-C to get the Insert special character
dialog, and then laboriously navigating to the key you desire, try these
special modifiers first:
Press Fn-Z and then release the keys. Then type a, e, o, or u.
The resultant character has an Umlaut applied.
Fn-Z then character: German Umlauts (ä, ö, ü),
diaereses
Fn-X then character: French grave accents (è)
Fn-C then character: French acute accents (é)
Fn-V then character: tilde (~)
Fn-Q then character: many other special characters including
German scharf-S (ß)

a search for accent or umlaut)
