The View into Adamstown from Garnets Ridge
Once a
year, Pitcairn Islanders take two open longboats on a
risky 110 mile trip to cut MIRO wood on uninhabited
Henderson Island. Carvings are generally made from MIRO,
TAMANU, and/or TAU wood, depending on the color,
texture, and use the carved item is to be put. Each
carving takes several days to make, and time can only be
spent on carving when necessary survival tasks are
completed. These are not mass-produced carvings, they
are individual works of art, dependent upon the
imagination of the creator, and the shape of the piece
of wood used. The woodworking skill dates back to 1823,
when seaman John Buffett agreed to stay on Pitcairn as
the first schoolteacher from abroad. A woodcarver
himself, he taught his techniques to his friends and
neighbors..

The Landing and
Bounty Bay
Welcome to Pitcairn!
When you arrive on our
beautiful island you will most probably be transported
in by one of the Island Longboats and arrive at the
Landing. This is where the famous Bounty was burnt over
200 years ago. Marvel at the history as you stand meters
away from the actual Bounty boat as it rests on the
bottom of this small and dangerous cove that the
Pitcairners use every day to fish, swim and unload cargo
in.
Drive up the hill on the
back of an Islanders 4x4 quad bike to your homestay
residence.
A homestay is available at
almost every household on the island, you will be
welcomed at every door.
Randy and Nadine Christian
will love to have you stay with them and their two
children Bradley and Emily at Flatland high above
Adamstown with a million dollar view of the Pacific
Ocean and looking out above the community. Experience
the life of a Pitcairn Islander. A small cost of $35USD
a night includes room and board and your meals. Email
