Mitre Peak
The first
Europeans to visit Milford Sound were sealers and it was one of them who,
in 1822,
gave it its European name. He was John Grono, from South Wales in the UK
with memories of Milford Haven, in his native land of South Wales. Mitre
Peak is 1642 mtrs high and this picture was taken fron Sandfly Point on
Milford Sound (yes, there are a lot of sandflies there!). This is where
the famous Milford Track ends, which is a 3-5 day walk
from
Lake Te Anau through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.
