Arctic

 1. "In the Footsteps of Parry" Expedition

I was a member of this 1998 British Arctic expedition to Melville Island, above the North West Passage, Canada. Edward Parry was a British naval explorer commissioned by the British government to explore a sea route to the Pacific Ocean above mainland Canada. Parry was defeated by sea ice and forced to winter-over on Melville Island. Whilst waiting for his two ships to be freed from sea ice the following spring, Parry and some of his crew explored the island, leaving cairns and artefacts. The 1998 expedition retraced Parry's route with the aid of his logbook. The following few photographs were all that were worthy of inclusion here. Most of my 54 rolls of film were damaged in processing.

Remains of an old eskimo dwelling
Parry also found these same dwellings in 1820
They are estimated to be 2-300 years old
The average height of an eskimo then was
only ~1.4 metres

2.    "Arcticyear" Expedition

On 1 January 2002, I flew to Svalbard (Spitzbergen) to join the British "Arcticyear 2001 - 2002" expedition. This expedition was of 12 months duration, divided up into three phases. It was a BSES Expeditions venture involving mainly Gap Year young people (young explorers - YE's). Look at
www.bses.org.uk

Phase 1
was from August to December 2001, involving 12 YE's and several leaders.
Phase 2 (wintering over) was from January to March 2002 with Just Mark Evans, Chief Leader and myself, plus two malumut dogs.
Phase 3 was from April to July 2002, involving 24 YE's and 5 leaders

Below are a few of the several thousand photographs I took throughout the expedition
