Atobe Keigo x Kamio Akira - The
Prince and the Pauper
The Explanation
Recently I've become addicted to one of the odder pairings in the
Prince of Tennis world - that of Hyoutei's Captain, Atobe Keigo, and
Fudoumine's Vice-Captain, Kamio Akira. Why BeKami? Well, I can't say
exactly. All I know is that the pair of them have moved into my head
and flatly refused to leave (even though Atobe claims the décor
is unworthy of his magnificence).
I guess it's because their personalities are so much fun to play with.
Atobe was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and proudly proclaims
his superiority over everyone else. Suave, sexy, and successful, he's
the kind of character most people love to hate, but he does it all with
such STYLE we forgive him. And then we find out that he really pushes
himself and trains incredibly hard to be the best. He's naturally
talented yes, but it's pure hard work that's got him to the top. He's
truly earned the right to call himself the best. And if you don't like
it, why should he care? Beat him in tennis, and MAYBE he'll care about
your opinion.
Hot-tempered Kamio couldn't be more different. A year younger and a
whole lot further down the social scale, he's a nobody who goes to a
public school with no history of success in anything. But like the rest
of Fudoumine's tennis team, he's not going to accept his relegation to
the gutter, and will fight furiously to claw his way into the big
leagues. Fans of the show love him (and all of Fudoumine) because of
their striving to triumph against all the odds. Poor or not, unknown or
not, Kamio will never, ever give up on his dream to compete at the
Nationals. Look down on him at your own peril!
Despite their differences, the boys do have a few things in common.
They're both stubborn and proud, and neither of them knows how to give
up or back down. It's this combination of contrasting backgrounds and
similarities in personality that makes them so much fun to write
together.
Which brings us to the fic. The first one written was "Competitive
Spirit", and it was supposed to be a one-off story. Then the second
story showed up... and then the third. Before I knew it, it had become
a series showcasing their relationship together. And then Atobe
demanded that they get their own page in order to remove himself from
the rest of the plebs on the main Prince of Tennis fanfiction index.
And here it is.

from G to NC-17. Check the rating and don't read if you don't like that
kind of thing!
Notice of re-write:
I have re-written parts of Competitive Spirit to bring it into line
with a PG-13 rating. That story, the first in this series, was
originally written as a one-off, set when the boys were in high school
and therefore capable of a much wider variety of activities. However as
the series grew, I was forced to shift it further back in time and
alter the setting accordingly. Consequently, I became uncomfortable
with the story as it stood, and have therefore made a number of
changes. I have tweaked a few of the other stories as well, all with
the basic intent of having the physical side of their relationship
develop more slowly, and more appropriately for the ages of the
characters. I thank my readers in advance for their understanding.
