"It's amazing," Eiji announced.
"Don't you think it's amazing, Fuji?"
"I do indeed."
"I mean," Eiji continued
enthusiastically, "You, me, all of us. We're all connected, part of the web of life, dependent on
each other, moving together, part of a greater whole..."
"Part of a net," Ryoma spoke for
the first time in half an hour. "Stuck together."
"Bound together would be better,
don't you think?" Fuji smiled at him. "It could be a web of destiny."
"Net. Net of destiny."
"That's not very poetic, Echizen."
"Neither is this situation,
sempai."
Ordinarily,
Ryoma would have made a slight gesture to indicate what he was talking
about. But given that the three boys were hopelessly tangled together
in a large heap of tennis nets, that was not an option.
"Still, I think there's something
to be learned from all of this," Fuji said, thoughtfully. "Some insight
into our lives."
"That's right!" Eiji enthused. "A
greater meaning! Something that will change the way we look at things!"
"Something
like 'this is why you shouldn't pounce on your friend and your kouhai
while all three of you are carrying bundled tennis nets on a slippery,
grassy slope'?"
"Ochibi!!! Look beyond the moment!"
"It stopped being a moment nearly
"Fuji! Make him stop!"
"Echizen,"
Fuji's voice was very gentle. "Perhaps you should ponder philosophy
silently, while Eiji and I continue our discussion."
Ryoma shot him a suspicious look.
"Philosophy?"
"Mmm. Something like, 'if a tree
falls in the forest, and there is no-one there to hear it, does it
still scream?'"
"... it's 'does it still make a
noise'."
"Really? Are you sure?"
"... no."
"Excellent. Then you ponder that,
and we'll ponder the mysteries of destiny."
"And how long it will be till
someone finds us and rescues us."
"Well yes, that too."
