Heritage ships and ship remains

within New Zealand

Various individuals and institutions are progressively compiling lists of heritage ship remains within New Zealand. I do not intend

to  duplicate their efforts, simply to draw attention to what they are doing and to add what I have that isn’t available elsewhere.

You are invited to send me your NZ web links for addition to this page. Try these for a start:

NZ Heritage Ship details at NZNMM

http://www.nzmaritime.co.nz/ or follow links from http://www.nzmaritime.org.nz/ includes Lakes steamers and the hulk remains in Lyttelton harbour.

NZ Historic Ships and Boats  (MOWCAS)

This site includes information about the early wooden immigrant ship Edwin Fox and the hold scow Echo both of which are at Picton. For the benefit of overseas readers, Picton can be visited in a day trip from Wellington on the inter-island ferry and both ships are within walking distance of the ferry terminus.  http://www.marlboroughonline.co.nz/index.mvc?ArticleID=44 gives you a fuller account of the Edwin Fox.

The Inconstant

http://inconstant.wellington.net.nz/inconstant.htm  and http://www.museumofwellington.co.nz/inconstant/index.html

The Inconstant was built in Nova Scotia 1847, wrecked at Wellington in 1849, used as a warehouse for many years, then buried within a reclamation. Substantial remains were excavated in 1997 and are displayed at two sites in the city with interpretative displays, one adjoining the Museum of Wellington City and Sea and the other on the original site in the lower level precinct of the old BNZ building shopping precinct at the junction of Lambton Quay, Willis St and Featherston St.

Auckland heritage ship remains: I plan to add a specific section on these. In the meantime, the Auckland Regional Council site has very good coverage of those on Rangitoto Island at
